From marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us Wed Jun 2 10:45:32 2010 From: marykay.dahlgreen at state.or.us (MaryKay Dahlgreen) Date: Wed, 2 Jun 2010 17:45:32 +0000 Subject: [AL-Directors] Gale Support Site for Academic Libraries Message-ID: Hi, One result of the late January meeting between academic librarians and reps from Gale was that Gale offered to develop a support site specifically for academic libraries. That site is now available at www.galesupport.com/oregonacad. We are sending this message to the academic library director list, Statewide Database Licensing Committee and those who attended the meeting in January with Gale. Please share this with your colleagues. Once you click on the link for your institution, you have access to your location ID, eBook MARC records, and database URLs. The column on the right offers technical and marketing information such as PubMed linking and database icons. Please take a look at the site and offer input to Gale about how they can make this resource the most useful for you. For comments or questions about accessing and using Gale products, use the Contact Us Form in the column on the right, or call or email Gale as outlined on the support site. For specific comments about ways to improve the support site, please use the Request Additional Content form. Questions about this? Contact MaryKay Dahlgreen (503-378-5012) or me. I am writing to urge you to activate your LYRASIS membership right away so you can begin to learn about the advantages of belonging to this national library consortium. The State Library is using LSTA funds to pay for your free membership that will extend through June 30, 2011. We are doing this because we believe many Oregon libraries will discover that belonging to LYRASIS makes sense and provides important benefits. To learn more about LYRASIS go to this web page: http://www.lyrasis.org/Membership/Member-Enrichment-with-BCR.aspx This page provides information on the transition that is taking place from BCR membership to LYRASIS membership. At the bottom of the page is a link to activate your free LYRASIS membership. I want to emphasize that there is no cost or obligation in joining LYRASIS in 2010-11. If you have questions about this and want to contact someone at LYRASIS, I suggest you contact Regan Harper, the new Western Regional Director of LYRASIS: 800.999.8558 x2953. Please take advantage of this free one-year membership so you can learn more about the benefits of becoming a member of LYRASIS. PowerStats includes the two most recent National Postsecondary Student Aid Studies (NPSAS), the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS), the Baccalaureate and Beyond Longitudinal Study (B&B), and the National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF). Users create tables and regressions with a visually intuitive drag and drop interface, receiving their results in a range of formats, including Excel and PDF. As the replacement to the NCES Data Analysis System (DAS), PowerStats provides helpful new features for users, including an improved capacity to search for variables, and saving recoded variables for future use. In addition, PowerStats allows users to build an online library of their work and to share their work with other PowerStats users. Access PowerStats at http://nces.ed.gov/datalab PowerStats and the postsecondary surveys are made available to the public by the National Center for Education Statistics at the Institute of Education Sciences. I am forwarding it to you to be sure you are aware of this effort to improve the Gale database products for academic libraries. A key strategy here is to have your staff tell Gale what journal titles they do not provide that your students and faculty need. I?d ask you to personally ask your staff to do this routinely as they come across titles that Gale does not have. We?ve made it easy to do. We heard about a lot of titles that Gale does not have during our procurement process last year. Gale says they will make every effort to add titles they do not have if we just let them know about them. We know that most of you are having to pay a lot to have two general reference database products right now. Our hope would be to see the Gale products improve to the point that many of you would not have to do this. This will only happen with your cooperation to let Gale know where they fall short. I hope you will communicate to your staff about this.
