I know that some of you have been engaged with your communities in the ways that Susan is describing below. If you have an example please share the information requested below. If you could cc: to me that would great too. Thanks.

Dear Ms. Dahlgreen,

Are you aware of libraries or museums engaged in partnerships to support comprehensive community revitalization initiatives? If so, we would like to hear from you. We are working together with Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), to better understand how these partnerships work. Our community development partners have emphasized that their efforts cannot succeed without enlisting the support of arts, cultural, and educational institutions like yours.

As you may know, the Federal government has ramped up its support for comprehensive community initiatives, so called because they aim to move beyond some of the piecemeal approaches of the past to attack the inter-related problems of low income communities in a coordinated way. The Department of Education's Promise Neighborhoods Initiative is just one example of this.

We at IMLS are pleased to help advance the state of the art in this field through a research partnership with LISC, the country's largest community development intermediary. LISC has been supporting comprehensive community change for ten years, and now backs community partnerships in 107 neighborhoods in 30 cities and many rural areas nationwide.

I am convinced that there are many ways in which libraries and museums already have contributed to comprehensive change, as I note in my recent article from the National Civic Review, attached. Further, we in the library and museum communities have much to gain from a clear demonstration of our public value in this space.

Our research effort will analyze the case material we assemble with your help and report back on the how's and why's of the most successful museum-library and community collaborations to foster revitalization. (I have attached a description of this project.) We have put some thought into what these case examples should illustrate, and our criteria for case selection are also attached. But in brief, we seek efforts that (1) foster community revitalization (2) through collaborations with community-based groups (3) which are sustained over time.

If you have examples in mind, please send a brief note to Lesley Lundgren of LISC (llundgren at lisc.org<mailto:llundgren at lisc.org>) by March 31. Your note should contain the project name and sponsor, name of contact person, and a project description that responds to the attached criteria. Please pass this request on to your members and colleagues.

In our published report, scheduled for later this year, we plan to highlight about a dozen well-documented collaborations and add 20-30 shorter examples as supporting evidence. In addition, this canvassing of the field is just the first step toward documenting a body of practice for on-line publication through LISC's Institute for Comprehensive Community Development. (You can view the website at www.institute-iccd.org<http://www.institute-iccd.org>.).

Many thanks for any help you can lend.
