Subject: Question to answer re: fuel economy

Good morning Answerlanders,

A patron has a question for us:

"If a manual transmission gets five fewer miles per gallon than a continuously variable transmission (both city and highway), how many miles would I have to drive before the continously variable transmission pays for itself in saved fuel economy (based on average driving habits)? In other words, I'll lose 5mpg for getting a manual transmission but the manual is $800 less than the CVT. How many miles would I have to drive before I recoup $800 in fuel savings if I bought the CVT instead of the manual?"
