Subject: Seeking Volunteers for Bicycle Counts

CALL FOR BIKE COUNT VOLUNTEERS!

Hello All,

Summer is upon us, and that means it's time once again for our Annual
Summer Bike Counts (
http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=44671&a=217489
).

It's no secret that the number of people riding in Portland has been
booming. Last year's counts demonstrated a fourth straight year of
double-digit increases in bike use. Will this trend continue? Only with
your help will we find out!

Come help us count bicyclists. Last year*s 75+ volunteers helped us
find out just how popular it's becoming to "go by bike" throughout the
city. Because of last year's impressive volunteer effort we were able
to span the entire city and collect bicycle counts at nearly 140
locations (see the report summarizing our findings here:
http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=44671&a=217489).
The counts, and the work of our volunteers, are integral to tracking our
progress in reaching our goal of making the bicycle a part of daily life
in Portland. THIS DATA IS TREMENDOUSLY IMPORTANT TO US!

Never ones to be satisfied with prior success, this year we are looking
to further expand our count locations. This means we'll need even more
volunteers!

Here's what you can do:

Step 1: Come to the Volunteer Training/Orientation***
Thursday, June 30th, 5:00-6:00 pm
Where: Conference Room C, The Portland Building (1120 SW 5th Avenue,
2nd floor).
We will feed you pizza and soda.

Step 2: Count
Over the course of the summer (June-Sept), conduct at least one, 2-hour
bicycle count at one of the intersections we'll have listed.

Step 3: Mail
Send us your completed count form in a self-addressed, stamped envelope
which we will give you at the training.

Step 4: Self-Congratulation
We get great data and you get the satisfaction of knowing you played a
crucial role in our efforts.

It's that easy!

PLEASE RSVP TO: (so we know how much pizza to buy)

P.S. Check out the bicycle master plan website to see how else we've
used our count data:

***This year we*re trying something new: If you don*t need to attend
the training session because you attended one in the past, counted at a
location in 2008, and also want to count again this year, please RSVP to
this email and let us know that you*d like to sign up for the same
location(s) you counted last year. Instructions for counting, the count
calendar, count map, and count forms can be downloaded from the top
right toolbar at:
http://www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=44671&.
Can*t remember where you counted? Shoot us an email and we*ll remind
you! When you*ve completed your count(s), mail them to us at:

City of Portland Office of Transportation
Attn: Denver Igarta
1120 SW 5thAvenue, Room 800
