Apologies for cross-posting PUBLIC HEALTH SEMINAR SERIES Date: Friday January 7, 2011 Time: Noon-1:00 PM ~ refreshments provided at 11:30 AM Location: OHSU, BICC, Room 124 HITTING THE STREETS: Bike Commuting Injuries in PDX Presented by Bill Lambert, PhD In Portland we like to go green, save some gas, and get fit. So we ride our bikes to work. Our city is recognized as one of the best in the country for its commitment to improve the bike infrastructure. But how safe is biking to work? OHSU researchers* followed a cohort of about 1,000 riders for one year, using web-based surveillance to count injuries, both large and small. About 20% of bike commuters experienced at least one trauma injury, and 5% had an injury requiring medical attention. This seems high! How do we compare to other places? What can be done for prevention? Please join us as Dr. Lambert shares information on the innovative methods used in this epidemiologic study, and the implications of this research for safety and injury prevention. Dr. Lambert is the Director of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Track of the Oregon Master in Public Health Program. He is actively involved in research on both clinical and community health topics, and specializes in the health effects of chemical toxins. And yes, he routinely commutes by bike to Marquam Hill and always wears his helmet. *This study was published in the November issue of the Journal of Trauma. See: Melissa R. Hoffman, William E.
