Hello all. Still lurking on this list. :-)
I would encourage this individual to read up on the history of VR in
California prior to starting any conversations. I don't have all or the
exact citations at my fingertips, but California did have a statewide
cooperative, I believe run by the State Library, which later disbanded.
There was also the Q&A Cafe that was a multi-library type cooperative and
which was started in the San Jose area, and of course, the MCLS Cooperative
in the L.A. area started by Susan McGlamery which eventually moved over to
OCLC.
I wrote about the history of many of the cooperatives in a book chapter in
2015:
- Johnson, K., (2014) Collaborative Virtual Reference: Past, Present,
and Future Trends. Reimagining Reference in the 21st Century. Purdue
University Press
I say this all not to discourage the individual from trying, but so that
this person goes into the conversations in California with full knowledge
of the history of what has already been done.
I hope you are all doing well!
Best,
*Kris Johnson
