Statement by Governor Ted Kulongoski on July Employment Numbers
Salem - "Oregon has held steady during the national economic uncertainty
of the last several months, but today's state job statistics serve as a
reminder that we are not insulated from national economic trends.
"As today's numbers show, rising fuel prices, increasing costs of health
care, and instability in the housing market are impacting consumer
confidence and jobs at both the national and state levels. Oregon
families are feeling this crunch and the state is working to do
everything we can to provide relief and help match those who want to
work with jobs that allow them to provide for themselves and their
families.
"I strongly believe that, despite this slowed job growth, Oregon's
economic development agenda is on the right track. We are investing in
sustainable industries that provide family wage jobs and encourage
innovation, we are helping more Oregonians attain a post-secondary
degree through the Oregon Opportunity Grant Program, and we are
investing in our public infrastructure that will allow us to take
advantage of the national economic recovery when it occurs.
"To help states during this economically volatile time, Congress should
pass a meaningful economic stimulus package when they reconvene in
September. The package should include investments in public works
projects, such as our nation's roads and bridges, revenue-sharing with
states and a multi-year reauthorization of the forest payments program.
"Also, Congress should act quickly to renew the federal energy tax
credits, so states like Oregon can continue to recruit companies that
invest in our people through job creation and a cleaner, more energy
independent America.
"Working with the local partners, the business community and the
legislature we will continue to invest in education, alternative energy
and living wage jobs as the foundation for a stronger economy and shared
prosperity for all Oregonians."
