Governor Kulongoski to Announce ConnectOregon III Grants
Following the grant announcement the Governor will tour a new wave
energy project site
(Salem) - Tomorrow Governor Ted Kulongoski will travel to Reedsport,
Oregon to announce the ConnectOregon III grants, which is the third
round of grants under this program dedicated to non-highway projects
across the state.
ConnectOregon is aimed at improving transportation connections around
the state by investing in non-highway projects such as rail,
marine/ports, aviation and public transit. ConnectOregon I and II (2005
and 2007, respectively) each authorized $100 million in lottery-backed
bonds for multimodal projects; ConnectOregon III set aside $5 million of
the $100 million for rural aviation projects.
Following the grant announcement, the Governor will be given a short
technical briefing by Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) and partners
regarding the future development of the Reedsport OPT Wave Park. The
10-buoy wave energy project is expected to supply clean energy to
approximately 1,000 homes. The first energy generating buoy, which is
being constructed by Oregon Iron Works, is anticipated to be deployed
into the ocean in 2011.
