Governor Kitzhaber Applauds Federal Disaster Assistance for Curry County

(SALEM, Ore.) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced a disaster reliefgrant of $1,196,738 to Curry County to fund repairs and replace damaged public infrastructure. The Port of Brookings-Harbor was damaged by tsunami waves that hit the Oregon Coast on March 11, and Governor Kitzhaber formally requested federal disaster assistance immediately afterward.

“I am grateful for the speed with which our Federal partners have responded throughout this process,” Governor Kitzhaber said. “We’ll continue to work with Curry County as it rebuilds and recovers.”

The tsunami waves and surges caused major damage in the Port of Brookings Harbor. The federal grant is for repair and replacement of approximately 3,630 lineal feet of floating docks which were swept away or destroyed. The damage included facilities in the harbors commercial and recreational basins, including facilities for the US Coast Guard which in 2010 performed 100 search and rescue missions from the harbor. 50% of the economy for the Brookings area is directly related to the commercial fishing and recreational boating provided out of Brookings Harbor.
