Good afternoon, team!
This afternoon Senate Bill 498 passed unanimously out of the Senate Education and Workforce Development committee. The list of people working behind the scenes is too numerous to mention in this e-mail, but special thanks must go out to the teachers, students and business partners who participated to make the hearing, and hence the bill, a success.
Coming all the way from Joseph Charter School in Joseph, Oregon (a nearly 7 hour drive today!) were teacher Liza Butts and her student, Christopher Warnock. From Churchill School in Eugene, teacher Grieg Thompson and his student, Joel Ramirez. And from Canby High School, teacher Jamie Netter and her student, Morgan Welch. Each student had a compelling story and the committee was very impressed. Andrew Beyer, Project Manager at Lease Crutcher Lewis in Portland presented a commanding list of why CTE programs are so important and why they should be "fully funded". Jon Chandler of the Oregon Homebuiliders reminded the committee of the many paths available to CTE students. Rounding out the supporting cast were lead presenters Senator Diane Rosenbaum, Representative Michael Dembrow, and Commissioner Brad Avakian of the Bureau of Labor and Industries. Laura Roach presented for ODE and was backed by a tremendous behind-the-scenes team of Donna Brant and Tom Thompson.
The bill now moves to Ways & Means to have the blank dollar amount of the funding filled in. We are hopeful that this strong presentation helps to encourage legislators who are making difficult funding decisions of the importance of expanding this vital program.
Again, many thanks to all of you for your support of the CTE Revitalization Grant. We'll keep you posted on the progress!
