Datamart/OBIEE users,

I wanted to pass along some helpful 'Dashboard' information as I noticed quite a few users started to build them.

The OBIEE contractor has recommended the use of 'Column Prompts' rather than 'Variable Prompts' when creating Dashboards. Currently, most users are choosing the 'variable prompt', most likely due to the familiarity with Hyperion; however, as a rule, ALWAYS use column prompts, when available. This will be the correct prompting method 99% of the time.

One of the main reasons for this selection is due to how each prompt pulls data behind-the-scenes. This may not seem like much but it helps immensely from a data extraction point of view.

Column Prompt - These are prompts for columns that exist in the subject area. Since the user specifies the column they are prompting for, when you create the prompt, OBIEE knows what column to apply a filter on.
Variable Prompt - Variable prompts are an option that allows you to store the prompt response to a variable, to be used elsewhere in your analysis. Since there is no connection between this newly created variable and the subject area, this does not automatically result in any type of filter in the analysis. It is merely a way to store a value for future use.

If you have already created a 'variable prompt' on your analysis, you may want to remove it and add the 'column prompt'.

Hope this helps,
Aaron Wallace
