SUBJECT: March * April 2007 Diversity Events Calendar
This is the time of year when winter wanes and spring beckons. Many of our New Year's resolutions have come and gone; yet, we still have the option for growth and development that can come with spring. For many around the world, spring has been a time for renewal, growth, and pursuit of unfulfilled opportunity.
This spring, numerous opportunities for self-improvement and growth abound. As we spring forward and days become longer, the Office of Multicultural Health encourages you to take in the many activities that will occur over the next couple of months. For one, March is National Women's Month so you are encouraged to attend or convene an activity honoring women of the United States, of which there have been many. One who is often feted is the timeless and tireless sage, Harriet Tubman. Perhaps an inspiration for Ms Rosa Parks, Tubman died on March 10th in 1913 after liberating over 400 slaves of African descent. On March 16th in 1827 the first African American newspaper, The Freedom Journal appeared.
March 31st provides us an opportunity to remember the indefatigable Cesar Chavez, who worked to bring honor and respect to a little-valued people and profession that have proven important for the health of all Americans * farm workers. On a more global level, March 8th is International Women's Day. Promoted by the United Nations, this is a day when women from all over the world are acknowledged and celebrated for their gifts and contributions to humankind. March 17th is an opportunity to celebrate St Patrick's Day; however, the OMH encourages you to learn more about the Irish, their struggles in and contributions to this great country.
April 27th is South African Freedom Day. This is a day that all in the world can celebrate and hold out hope that people of all backgrounds can indeed coexist. South Africa has been a lesson in freedom and equality that may remind many people around the globe that coming together on our common interests may be a stepping stone to exploring and accepting our differences. Lastly, the first week in April is Public Health Week. The OMH implores you to check in on loved ones, donate time or other resources to the health of others, and generally look for ways to enhance the health of all peoples.
In this time of renewal it may not only be ourselves that can benefit from new energy and vistas. One can seriously contribute to the health and well-being of others. The OMH will continue its struggle to improve the health and lives of the many Oregonians on whose behalf we proudly work.
Enjoy!
