NANOOS Observer

June 2017

Join us for our NANOOS Workshop July 13 in Newport, OR!

NANOOS will be hosting a free workshop on July 13 at the Oregon Coast Community College in Newport, OR. This day-long event is open to the public, and will be a great opportunity to learn useful tools that NANOOS provides, and give us feedback on our products. You can register here<http://nanoos.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=44d1533178eb288deb65a1505&id=fe3b3f1af1&e=de1c2ea3cc>, and find more information on our website<http://nanoos.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=44d1533178eb288deb65a1505&id=214ea3f1c0&e=de1c2ea3cc>.

Data updates on NVS (NANOOS Visualization System)

Climate Indices in Climatology App
The NVS Climatology app<http://nanoos.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=44d1533178eb288deb65a1505&id=67d11ca181&e=de1c2ea3cc> now includes data from multiple climate indices relevant to the NANOOS region, from 1980 to the present. These indices include the Multivariate ENSO Index, NINO 3.4, North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO), and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). These data are particularly useful in identifying variations in the climate system over the past three decades. You can visualize and download these data, as well as link to the source providers for further information.

New variables in LiveOcean model
The LiveOcean model <http://nanoos.us6.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=44d1533178eb288deb65a1505&id=b97c0c5ef4&e=de1c2ea3cc> now features forecasts for oxygen, nitrate, and phytoplankton, in addition to pH, aragonite saturation, temperature, and salinity. These variables are forecasted throughout the water column, from the surface to 2,000 meters.

Surface Currents restored on NVS
The high-frequency radar data provided by Oregon State University are back on NVS in an improved display. These surface current measurements are now much easier to see and understand, with the ability to hover over an area and read the current velocity value.

NANOOS Outreach

Coho Ho Ho Sailing Rally
On May 23, NANOOS Outreach Specialist Rachel Wold presented the NVS Boaters App during a "Coho Ho Ho" educational seminar at Fisheries Supply in Seattle. The Coho Ho Ho is a sailing rally leaving Puget Sound in August for its annual cruise south along the coast to Baja. The NVS Boaters App offers a number of features, including near-real time weather and sea state observations, forecasts, routing capabilities and marine information to help keep boaters safe on the water.
