Medical Evidence and the Role of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners in Cases
Involving Adult Victims?

This publication serves as a handbook to prosecutors working with
medical evidence and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) in cases of
violence against adult victims. When the SANE examination takes on a
more investigation-centered approach, it is often because of the belief
that such a practice philosophy will result in more effective
investigations and prosecutions of sexual assault cases.  This is not a
finding supported by recent research.  This monograph provides
prosecutors with an understanding of how SANEs focused on patient care
and appropriate support services and referrals, rather than a specific
investigative agenda can positively impact victim engagement in the
criminal prosecution of their perpetrator.  A glossary of commonly used
terms used in medical examination reports is also included.
