Good Morning,
I recently received an email regarding a new project that AEquitas: The
Prosecutor's Resource on Violence Against Women is undertaking. With
their partners, the Battered Women's Justice Project (BWJP) and the
Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, AEquitas has received a grant to
create the National Witness Protection Center. The Center will focus on
identifying and dealing with systemic gaps in the criminal justice realm
when it comes to witness intimidation and related topics. Those of us
who deal with Domestic Violence understand how often witness
intimidation occurs. So, be on the look out for the Center's training
and resource announcements.
In looking for more information, I visited the AEquitas website and was
reminded about the many resources that they offer. So, this email is to
provide you the link (below) and encourage you to visit.

AEquitas not only provides training opportunities, but they provide
scholarships to those trainings. I know of at least three proscecutors
in the Oregon who have been able to attend national trainings for FREE
just by submitting a brief scholarship request.
Additionally, AEquitas offers "library" resources. The "Model Policy for
Prosecutors and Judges on Imposing, Modifying, and Lifting Criminal
No-Contact Orders" struck me this morning due to a story I just heard
from a local prosecutor: Recently, in a case where the defendant was
charged with felony assault IV, the judge waived the no-contact order at
arraignment stating that the incident appeared to be a "one-time deal."
Clearly, we have lots of work to do.
Finally, in addition to the AEquitas website, the BWJP and Pennsylvania
Coalition's website(s) also offer great information.
Thanks for indulging the long email.
