Using the Power and Control Wheel developed by Ellen Pence and Praxis International, moderator Casey Gwinn and psychologist Dr. Diane Lass will interview four survivors from the National Family Justice Center Alliance VOICES Committee about their experiences with their abusers. This practical seminar will help police officers, prosecutors, and advocates in learning how to use the Power and Control Wheel to interview victims of domestic violence, strangulation, and spousal sexual assault.

Read Casey Gwinn's Latest Blog: It Is Domestic Violence Month - Are We Aware?

As we celebrate Domestic Violence Awareness Month across America, the struggle to reduce and prevent domestic violence and related sexual assault rages.  Each week this month approximately 20 women, men, children, and police officers have died in family violence related incidents (an average of four per day). Last week, the Topeka City Council decriminalized domestic violence in an effort to save money.  Sadly, many communities are prosecuting less abusers and holding less violent offenders accountable for their violence against women, children, and men even though they don't get the attention like Topeka.  Even with strong support from the Obama Administration, less and less resources are available in local communities even as the amount and type of violence increases.  And as I write today, we are in week 12 of a series of domestic violence mass murders or near mass murders that have swept across America. Not including the daily array of murders and murder-suicides, forty-six people have died in nine domestic violence-related murders since July 8, 2011 and there has been no national media or public awareness about this epidemic of deaths.

April 17-19, 2012 in New Orleans, LA

The 12th Annual International Family Justice Center Conference, hosted by the Family Justice Center Alliance, will include discussions on issues related to the handling of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, elder abuse and stalking cases in the context of the Family Justice Center model. The Alliance welcomes law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, shelter staff, community-based victim advocates, civil attorneys, judges, counselors, policy makers, elected officials, board members, survivors, parole and probation officers, rape crisis workers, medical personnel, educators, and all others interested in the future of family violence prevention. The conference faculty includes nationally and internationally recognized subject matter experts, advocates, and survivors.

The theme for our conference this year is "Coming Together to Change the World." This conference will focus on leadership, accountability to survivors, guiding principles and promising practices in the rapidly evolving national and international movement toward Family Justice Centers and other approaches to co-located, multidisciplinary services for victims of family violence and their children.  The conference will also include practical, hands-on training for police officers, prosecutors, advocates, and medical professionals in the day to day handling of domestic violence and sexual assault cases.

This year's conference features the New Orleans Family Justice Center and will have a special focus on sexual assault. Specific sessions will be tailored to address sexual assault awareness, prevention, and intervention.
