Physical Restraint Interest Group:

At the end of January, ODE sent out a memo on Review of OARs on Corporal
Punishment and Physical Restraint.
http://www.ode.state.or.us/sped/new/corporalpunishmentmemo.pdf

If you receive this e-mail, it's because you expressed an interest in
being part of a discussion about the use of physical restraint in the
schools, and whether more regulation is necessary. You are teachers,
assistants, professors, advocates, administrators, trainers and parents.

Please mark your calendars! I am planning a meeting/forum on Thursday,
May 13, 2004, 8:30 - 12:00, to discuss these issues. This meeting/forum
will be held at the Public Service Building, Basement A, 255 Capitol
Street NE, Salem. This is a "no frills" meeting - bring your own coffee
and food. Even with diminished resources, we can tackle difficult issues
and consider the various interests at stake.

I will send you more detailed information about two weeks before the
meeting, and will ask you to RSVP at that time so we know how many
people to expect. Right now, my plan is to begin with a panel to frame
issues and concerns. The panel will include an advocate, someone from
Mental Health, an educator, a parent, etc. Please e-mail any ideas or
suggestions you have for this event, and any information you think would
be helpful to have in advance or at the meeting. If you know of others
who did not get this but might be interested, you are welcome to share
the invitation. Please contact Darlene Hendrickson at
mailto:darlene.hendrickson at state.or.us to be added to the interest group
e-mail list.

I will be out of the office from April 16 to 22. I look forward to
reading your e-mails when I get back. Suzy
