Large-Scale Assessments for Special Populations: Working with the
Oregon Extended Assessments
In-Service Workshop
October 8, 2004
8:00-3:30
Holiday Inn
Portland, Oregon
Sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) with Behavioral
Research and Teaching and Portland State University
Oregon Extended Assessments: Reading, Writing, Mathematics, & Science
and Career and Life Role Assessments
Since the implementation of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, the
spotlight has fallen squarely on large-scale assessment as a barometer
for the academic health of our schools and students.
The intent to include all students in large-scale assessment led to the
creation of Oregon's Extended Reading, Extended Writing, Extended
Mathematics, Extended Science assessments, and the Career and Life Role
Assessment System [CLRAS] for the evaluation of students with
significant cognitive disabilities.
Extended Assessments:
*Allow students with disabilities to be included and counted in
accountability systems and reform efforts
*Allow students with disabilities to benefit from instructional
adjustments resulting from assessment outcomes
*Provide policy makers with academic information on all students to
account for instructional time and financial resources
Why should I attend?
* NCLB and IDEA require the evaluation of all students; both teachers
and policymakers need to account for all students to make decisions
about important resources.
* Information provided by the Extended Assessments is useful in the
decision-making process for students with disabilities.
What will I learn?
* The components of the Extended Assessments
* Administration of tasks
* Performance reports and interpretations
* Management of implementation
* Use of self-training and proficiency testing
* Accommodations and modifications
* Partnerships with other specialists
* Updates on new tasks
* Preview of Extended Science Assessment
How do I register?
* By September 30, complete the form on the right or register online
* There is no charge to Oregon educators.
