Why Local?
With spring in full swing and summer right around the corner, options for fresh,
local and home grown abound. Fresh fruits and vegetables are in abundance from
local farmer's markets or farm stands and local health food stores. Natural food
chain stores and supermarkets are increasingly offering a wider selection of locally
grown produce.
Eating a local diet helps support local area farmers and preserves open space and
farmland. It's also better for the local economy and reduces the eco-impact of transporting
food.
When shopping for fruits and vegetables, pay attention to what's in season to get
all the taste and the health benefits of seasonal produce year round. Seasonal produce
is not only fresher but can save you money as plentiful supply means lower prices
and more "specials" on seasonal fruits and veggies.
