From sschneid at usgs.gov Tue Feb 1 11:40:42 2011 From: sschneid at usgs.gov (Sheri Schneider) Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2011 11:40:42 -0800 Subject: [gis_info] The National Map Users Conference and GIS Workshop abstract deadline is extended to February 6, 2011 Message-ID: If you haven't submitted an abstract, please consider doing so. It is shaping up to be a great conference! Please contact me if you have any questions. The "Call for Abstracts" supporting The National Map Users Conference and GIS Workshop to be held May 10-13, 2011 in Denver has been extended to Sunday February 6, 2011. For more information and submission form, go to: http://nationalmap.gov/uc/ Why should I attend? The goal of the interactive workshop and conference is to serve and enhance communications among the communities of users of The National Map, Federal GIS specialists and scientists, and data providers. Topics will include existing applications and visions for future scientific and modeling applications using The National Map, opportunities for partnerships, and advances in geospatial technologies. The event will focus on user and partner interaction using various formats: interactive panels, lightening sessions, poster presentations, workshops, as well as presentations and demonstrations. This gathering is designed to provide a relaxed, collaborative, and informative venue to explore the direction of The National Map, mapping trends, and GIS applications. I'd encourage you to review this proposal from GISCI and weigh in with your comments. GISCI is compiling comments and gathering votes/comments on the options that the GISCI Board of Directors is considering after the end of the comment period (28 Feb 2011). In case the hyperlink does not translate to the listserves, the URL is http://gisci.ideascale.com . Original press release below. ------------------ Milt ________________________________ Press Release GISCI Invites Comment on Proposed Examination Requirement January 28, 2011: The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) today made public a proposal to update requirements for GIS Professional (GISP) certification. Key among the proposed updates is the addition of a required examination. The Working Group that prepared the proposal recommends that the exam be based on the U.S. Department of Labor's new Geospatial Technology Competency Model and related resources. The "GISP Certification Update" proposal is available for public review at http://www.gisci.org, along with instructions on how individuals can share their views about proposed changes. As part of its deliberations the GISCI Board of Directors will consider comments received between February 1 and February 28, 2011. A Board decision about proposed changes is expected in April, 2011. GISCI has certified nearly 5,000 GISPs since its founding in 2004. The purpose of GISP certification is to advance the GIS profession by promoting competent and ethical practice. The goal of the GISP Certification Update Initiative is to strengthen GISP certification by increasing its value to individual GISPs, to the profession, and to society.
