Oregon and Southwest Washington URISA is proud to sponsor a workshop featuring two premier Northwest cartographers: Stuart Allan of Allan Cartography and Benchmark Maps, and Matthew Hampton, Chief Cartographer at Portland Metro widely recognized for the impressive range of his innovative work over the last several years.

They are going to be providing an all day cartographic workshop in Bend at McMenamins Old St Francis. Oregon URISA is subsidizing the cost of this workshop so the fee is only $60 to attend. Lunch is included.

The same day, there will be a Cartography Fair host by BendTech. More information is available on Meetup<http://www.meetup.com/maptimebend/events/229051741>.

To register, please visit the Oregon URISA web site<http://www.orurisa.org>. This workshop may sell out, so you are encouraged to register early. Registrations will be refundable until March 31, 2016.

Time & Location: 9 AM - 3 PM @ McMenamins Old St Francis, 700 NW Bond Street, Bend

Description: Clear communication depends on the cartographer choosing which elements are most important and must be most easily seen. This critical step is commonly ignored. It's easier to use a pre-existing base and a standardized set of symbols, fonts, and colors, including every map element important for some message-- but, usually, not for the message this particular map is supposed to convey.

The workshop will be a practicum on purposeful selective map design and production illustrating design problems and solutions (or failures) with a collection of samples from a variety of agencies and publishers. We encourage participants to bring samples of their own projects as well, for an informal evaluation and group-wide discussion.

Workshop Leaders are Stuart Allan, on design principles and graphic choices; and Matthew Hampton on executing these choices in ArcMap.

Instructor: Stuart Allan and Matthew Hampton

A computer is not required.
