[gis_info] Talk and workshop on SuperTracts concept and application

On Wednesday April 10th at 2 PM Dr, Richard Lycan, PSU Institute on Aging
and Professor Emeritus of Geography and Urban Studies, will be giving a
talk titled* Using data from the American Community Survey and the Census
with ESRI's ArcMap, *The talk will be in room 411 in the Urban Center
building. It will include:

   1.  A discussion of problems with sampling variability in survey data
   from the American Community Survey (ACS) and his effort to aggregate census
   tract level data into SuperTracts to produce more reliable maps and a
   2.  Demonstration of an Excel VBA application to facilitate the data
   aggregation and formatting the data for easy use with ArcMap or Pro.The 100
   supertracts for the Portland Metro area were aggregated from the 500 census
   tracts with the help of GIS staff in the seven counties in the Portland
   Metro area.

Dr. Lycan also is  giving a two hour presentation on "Mapping With the ACS
and Census" at GIS in Action at 8:30 AM on Monday April 22. This will be a
hands on class on using the Census Bureau's American Factfinder to find the
data you need and linking it to maps in ArcMap. We will use the
*SuperTract* VBA
application to format the downloads for use with ArcMap/Pro and to
summarize it for census tracts and supertracts. There is a sign up for the
class and a size limit of 25 persons
