We've got some great pre-conference activities lined up for you this year! Please note, there is a charge for the Tuesday Night field trip, but no charge for the two Wednesday preconference sessions.

Tuesday, May 3, 2011: Join us for a tour of a low-literacy community clinic in IHA's building, Friends of Family Health Center, hosted by IHA. Enjoy a tour of this new, state of the art, paperless primary care facility, hear a talk about how the low literacy components were set up, and enjoy light refreshments. Transporation included. Cost and times will be posted on the IHA website.
Wednesday, May 4, 2011: National Action Plan Live Virtual Event, 11:30 am -- 1 pm Pacific time. This event will bring in participants from all over the country to discuss via social media the importance of the National Action Plan. Social Media discussion is produced and moderated by our friends at Health Literacy Missouri; discussion moderators at the session are IHA's Gloria Mayer and Michael Villaire. Workshop: Draft Your Own Action Plan, 1:30 pm -- 3 pm Pacific time. Attendees at the conference can stay for this workshop to walk you each step of the National Action Plan so you can write your own Action Plan and implement it in your organization
Wednesday, May 4, 2011, Health Literacy 101: An Introduction to the Field. For those who are somewhat new to the field of health literacy, join us for this basic, introductory overview of the field, and learn what you need to know about health literacy.

Best Buy for Your Education Dollars

These days, we all need to look at where we can best spend our money. This is particularly true for nonprofit organizations. However, when you consider that only slightly more than one in 10 American adults are considered proficient in the health literacy skills they need to effectively navigate and use our healthcare system, you can see that the Health Literacy Conference is an excellent buy. If you make even a small number of incremental changes in how you and your staff interact and communicate with your patients and clients, the results could more than pay for your small investment.

We have kept our tuition rates at the same low rate every year. See our rates grid to know how little you will pay to attend this important conference. And remember, your tuition includes:
Breakfast on Thursday and Friday
Lunch on Thursday and Friday
Opening Night Reception
Tuesday night trip to visit IHA's low literacy-friendly clinic ($30)
FREE Wednesday nationwide virtual event to help you create a health literacy action plan for your organization
FREE Preconference Session on Wednesday evening: "Health Literacy 101: An Introduction to the Field"
Continuing Education credits
Complimentary tote bag with info and gifts
Multiple networking opportunities
Poster session on Thursday evening
..and more!
If you need more convincing, please call Michael Villaire at IHA, (800) 434-4633, ext. 202, or email at mvillaire at iha4health.org.

Geri-Ann Galanti: The Intersection of
Culture and Health Literacy
In this email, we focus on Geri-Ann Galanti, PhD. She earned her doctorate in medical anthropology and is one of the leading experts on cultural anthropology. Much of her work involves helping healthcare providers become more culturally aware.

Geri-Ann is a big believer that health literacy involves more than just understanding a patient's language. "Beliefs about health and illness, time orientation, and cultural values play an important role in health literacy. A culturally competent healthcare provider can help improve understanding."

Don't miss Dr. Galanti's session on "Communicating Across Cultures: Issues and Solutions," scheduled for Friday, May 6 at the conference.
