Hello OPHA Health Education & Promotion section members! I hope you can join us for our next meeting. We will have an excellent guest speaker joining us. Dana Sturtevant, dietitian and trainer in Motivational Interviewing, will discuss Ellyn Satter's approach to working with families around food/weight concerns: Provide, don't deprive, then trust your child to grow up to be the size and shape that is right for him or her. Participants will:
· Review the two major causes of child overweight from Satter's perspective: 1) misinterpreting a child's normal size and shape and labeling it overweight and 2) imposing food restriction
· Learn strategies to work with families, including the division of responsibility with regards to feeding and activity
· Identify practical ways to create an atmosphere for honest and constructive discussions with families about health behavior change
About the presenter:
Dana Sturtevant, MS, RD is a registered dietitian, Kripalu yoga teacher and trainer in Motivational Interviewing with extensive experience using a non-diet, health at every size approach to help individuals let go of food/weight obsession to heal relationship with food and reach a natural, healthy weight. Dana works with patients using awareness practice and conscious eating guidelines as the foundation for a more enjoyable eating experience.
