On March 19th, the OPHA Health Promotion & Education Section and the
Healthy Environments Section are hosting the Oregon Environmental Council
presentation, *Pollution in People*.

In the Oregon Pollution in People study, a diverse group of ten women and
men volunteered to have their bodies tested in a study of chemical
pollution in Oregonians. Every person tested had at least 9 and as many as
16 toxic chemicals in his or her body including PFCs, phthalates, mercury,
pesticides, bisphenol A, and PCBs. While some of these toxic chemicals
came from contaminated soil, air, and water, many of the pollutants also
came from food, everyday household dust, and from direct contact with
products such as personal care items, plastic products, consumer
electronics, and stain-resistant furniture. The toxic chemicals in our
bodies are cause for concern because they can lead to health problems and
as this study demonstrates, we are all contaminated with these toxic
chemicals. This presentation will discuss the chemicals tested for, health
impacts linked to these toxins, and simple steps individuals can take to
reduce exposure to these compounds.
