*Health Literacy: Tools for Public Health Professionals*

Presented by Amanda Lawrence

Hosted by the Oregon Public Health Association’s

 Health Education & Promotion Section

* *

Health literacy, the ability to comprehend health information well enough
to make appropriate decisions, affects more people than you probably think.
It is estimated that only 12% of patients fully comprehend health
instructions and information. This leads to poorer health outcome and
increased medication errors. While some sub-populations are at an elevated
risk of low health literacy, it affects people from all socio-economic
backgrounds.

Last year, The Wallace Medical Concern, a Federally Qualified Health Center
in east Multnomah county, received a three-year grant to implement a
clinic-wide and cross-agency health literacy intervention. The project
manager, Amanda Lawrence, will discuss the activities conducted thus far
and facilitate skills-building activities.

Medical providers and health education and promotion professionals are
welcome.
