>

> Leonard Doak
> The February 14 deadline is fast approaching for the Leonard Doak Memorial Scholarship in Health Literacy. Created in 2012 to honor the memory of the late Leonard Doak, a pioneer in health literacy along with his wife, Ceci, this scholarship provides one person who works with an underserved, vulnerable population with comprehensive training in how to create effective patient education materials. Our goal is to make a significant difference to a needy population by training one person who is in a position to serve that population with effective patient education materials.

> Judges will review applications and select one winner. That person will get an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2014 IHA Health Literacy Conference, May 7-9, in Irvine, CA. There, they will attend an all-day preconference workshop, "Writing and Designing Effective Communication: A Comprehensive Course," taught by Jann Keenan and Janet Ohene-Frempong, IHA strategic partners in health literacy and nationally renowned authorities in health literacy. The winner will also be mentored for one year by Ceci Doak, and present results of their efforts during the year as a poster at the 2015 IHA Health Literacy Conference (expenses paid for this as well).

> If you haven't already applied for this scholarship, please do so today. Know somebody and who would benefit greatly from comprehensive training? Please forward this email to them. Not eligible for the scholarship? Join us at the health literacy conference anyway, to learn more about health literacy and strengthen your skill set.
