Suppose construction of a major housing development has been proposed in your heath jurisdiction. There is public interest in creating a healthy community that would be sustainable, not as car dependent, and welcoming to all income levels. Several community leaders have approached the Health Department to get involved to help model healthy community design. This is an important opportunity for both your community and your Health Department. It is the first step in establishing capacity within your Health Department to ensure public health is considered in every land use and community design issue. You have the access to research, expertise and data that could help influence the decision making process, but you aren*t certain how to be most effective. You need to identify department data and expertise and then share this information in an organized and persuasive manner. This course will help you prepare to do just that. This interdisciplinary course examines how the design of communities can have positive and adverse impacts on human health and provides tools to examine these impacts. The health impact assessment (HIA) is a public health tool used to inform decision-makers about the potential health impacts of proposed projects, programs, and policies that do not traditionally focus on health outcomes (e.g. transportation, education, housing), but are likely to affect the public*s health. HIAs are used to recommend improvements to proposed projects, programs, and policies, and represent a new and emerging practice in the United States (www.cdc.gov/healthyplaces/hia.htm). In this course, students will review the links between health and the built environment, learn the steps to conduct an HIA, review HIA case studies, discuss how HIA findings may impact decision making, and participate in class exercises to gain practical experience in conducting HIAs. This course is appropriate for students interested in the links between public health and community design and will include readings, discussions and in-class exercises. Andrew Dannenberg ( http://www.nwcphp.org/training/summer-institute/2011/faculty )After completing this course, participants will be able to: Explain how the built environment and community design impact public health both positively and negatively Describe the purpose, benefits, and challenges of using health impact assessments to convey information about health to decision-makers Describe the core steps used to conduct HIAs including screening, scoping, assessment, making recommendations, reporting, and evaluation Summarize the similarities and differences in using HIA as an approach separate from Environmental Impact Assessments Collaborate effectively with others in conducting and analyzing an HIA in an interdisciplinary environment Explain the application of HIAs to the policymaking process Jamie Jones Health Impact Assessment Program Intern Office of Environmental Public Health Public Health Division, Oregon Health Authority Email: jamie.jones at state.or.us ( about:jamie.jones at state.or.us ) www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/hia/ Office Hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
