TREATY EVENTS HIGHLIGHTED ON STATE'S HOMEPAGE
The State of Oregon's homepage on the web currently has "150th Anniversary =
of Treaty Signings" as a special feature. The feature includes a link to =
an article about two confederated tribes within Oregon that are making =
plans to observe the Sesquicentennial of their treaty signings =96 =
documents that ceded tribal lands to the U.S. government, and helped guide =
tribes=92 interactions with the federal government and the State of Oregon =
over the past 150 years.
The State of Oregon's homepage is located at www.oregon.gov. In addition =
to the special feature, the site provides you an entrance to tens of =
thousands of documents and forms from state agencies.
GATHERING LAUNCHES SESQUICENTENNIAL PLANNING
A gathering of more than 200 Oregonians met May 23 to begin creating an =
outline for the 150th anniversary of Oregon statehood.
Meeting on the Willamette University campus in Salem, attendees talked in =
small groups about what it means to be an Oregonian, the state's history, =
current challenges, and potential opportunities for the Sesquicentennial. =
Their comments will be used to begin an outline for a Sesquicentennial.
Speakers at the gathering's plenary sessions included former Oregon =
Governor Victor Atiyeh; Cheryle Kennedy, chair of the Confederated Tribes =
of the Grand Ronde; "Rudy" Clements, an elder with the Confederated =
Tribes of the Warm Springs; Kelsey White, a National History Day winner =
who attends Sisters High School; and Tim Wood, director of the Oregon =
Parks and Recreation Department.

PRESERVATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS JUNE 1
The State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation will conduct its =
next regular public meeting beginning at 8:30 a.m. June 2 at the North =
Mall Office Building (Room 124) , 725 Summer St. NE in Salem. For online =
access to the draft agenda, which lists the nominations to the National =
Register of Historic Places scheduled to be considered by the committee, =
please go to www.hcd.state.or.us . From the left side menu select =
"Advisory Boards", then follow the links to "Information on SACHP =
Meetings."
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED
Special activities will take place in The Dalles and Bend during Memorial =
Day weekend.
The Wasco County Historical Society announces its opening May 28-30 of the =
Rorick House Museum in The Dalles. It will be open Saturdays and Sundays =
through Sept. 4, and on Sept. 5.. Visitor hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. =
Admission is free. A non-commissioned officer from historic Camp Drum, =
which later became Fort Drum and then Fort Dalles, built the original =
two-room portion of the Rorick House Museum about 1850. A fireplace added =
by a later occupant utilized stone from the Fort Dalles bakery. Visit

The High Desert Museum in Bend will fire up its Lazinka sawmill May 28-30. =
With its 48-inch blade and retrofitted steam powered engine, the Lazinka =
mill is a fully functional, turn-of-the-20th-century mill. The High Desert =
Museum, located just south of Bend on Highway 97, is open daily 9 a.m.-5 =
