TWO GRANT DEADLINES FAST APPROACHING

Deadlines for applications for Oregon Museum Grants and Alderson
Internship Grants are set for the next few weeks.

Oregon museums that meet certain qualifications are eligible to apply
for Oregon Museum Grants. The grants support Oregon museums in projects
for the collection and management of heritage collections, for
heritage-related tourism, and heritage education and interpretations.
Applications for the next round are due Nov. 24. A second round of
applications will be accepted until May 17. For the application and

The American Association for State and Local History is offering its
institutional members with budgets under $250,000 the opportunity to
apply for the Alderson Internship Grant Program. Application forms can
be found at www.aaslh.org/alderson.htm.  The application deadline is
Dec. 9 for an internship beginning in summer 2010.  For more

EXHIBIT PLANNING WORKSHOP SET FOR PORTLAND

The University of Oregon will offer a two-weekend course in January in
Portland on planning interpretive exhibits. Taught by longtime educator
and exhibit planner Alic Parman, participants will learn how to go about
developing an exhibit concept, study ways to organize and manage the
exhibit design process, learn how to apply research skills in exhibit
design, increase the ability to critique exhibit concepts and labels,
and practice writing text for exhibits.

The all-day sessions will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 16 and Jan. 30 at

FAMILY'S HISTORY PRESENTATION SLATED FOR NEWPORT

Ted Cox, the author of "Murray Loop: Journey of an Oregon Family
1808-1949," will speak at 2 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Carriage House of the
Lincoln County Historical Society, 545 SW Ninth St., Newport.

The recently published book threads together a family’s life as it
makes the 5,000-mile journey from Scotland to Oregon’s Coast Range to

150 YEARS OF TOYS ON EXHIBIT IN NORTH BEND

"150 Years of Toys" will be open until Nov. 30 at the Coos Historical &
Maritime Museum, 1220 Sherman Ave., North Bend. This exhibit is a
lighthearted salute to children's indoor and outdoor play as part of the
State of Oregon's 150th birthday and will include a variety of toys
enjoyed by Coos County children. This exhibit has been made possible, in
part, through a grant from the Coos County Cultural Coalition. For more

EMERGENCY RESOURCES AVAILABLE ONLINE

The Heritage Emergency National Task Force offers tools and information
to cultural institutions and the general public for preparing for and
responding to emergencies that affect collections and treasures. The
information is available in audio, video and document downloads at

The free information includes disaster preparedness resources, disaster
recovery resources, protect family treasures, navigating federal
disaster aid, federal disaster funding for cultural institutions, tips
for working with emergency responders and more.

LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY FEATURED IN REEDSPORT PRESENTATION

The Umpqua Discovery Center, 409 Riverfront Way, will host a program at
6:30 p.m. Nov. 19 on the Umpqua lighthouse as part of its series on "A
History of Communities on the Lower Umpqua River."  The program is in a
seminar format, encouraging the audience to participate. For more
