[Heritage] Collections workshops to bring newest techniques to conference

Good collections practices are critical for the efficient management of organizations. Two workshops taking place on the opening day of this year's Oregon Heritage Conference will give participants the opportunity to learn and practice good techniques for archives, libraries and museums.

One workshop sponsored by the State Historical Records Advisory Board will focus on best practices in archival appraisal, arrangement and description. Many organizations have significant backlogs of records, unavailable to researchers. A recent technique adopted by some archives may help to reduce these backlogs. Learn how it can simplify your traditional archival processing practice whether you are part of an archive, library, local government, museum or another heritage organization. The workshop instructors are Layne Sawyer of the Oregon State Archives and Dan Cantrall of the State Historical Records Advisory Board.

A second workshop is offered by three heritage professionals from diverse organizations.  "Your Power of Observation: Describing Collections and Condition Reports" is designed so participants can walk away knowing what is essential to writing a concise, detailed and effective description of an object. You will leave behind meaningless terms such as "good," "poor" and "wooden chair" and learn to create descriptions that will help take your collections care to a new level. Maija Anderson of OHSU's Historical Collections and Archives, Heather Bouchey of the Portland Art Museum, and Kathleen Daly of the Oregon Military Museum will lead the workshop.

The Oregon Heritage Conference will take place April 23-25 in historic downtown Albany with the theme of "Celebrate, Recreate, Invigorate."  An engaging keynote talk, special tours, cutting-edge research expositions, and meeting colleagues from across the state are important benefits for attending. The Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards will take place on the evening of April 24.

The Oregon Heritage Conference will take place at several downtown locations, with registration at the Albany Regional Museum.  The Albany Downtown Association, the Albany Visitors Association and the City of Albany are also assisting with the conference.
