EMERGENCY INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON TWO WEBSITES

December is a month when some heritage organizations suddenly find themselves dealing with an emergency.

Oregon Heritage has two updated websites if you are suddenly looking for information. The first is its emergency planning and response<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/disaster_list.aspx> webpage. The other is the Mind Your Collections webpage for emergency resources<http://mindyourcollections.org/emergency-prepresponse/>.

At the least, take time to bookmark them or to complete the Pocket Response Plan<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/docs/OC2C%20Prep%20Plan.doc> (PReP).

COLLECTIONS SELF-ASSESSMENT PROGRAM AVAILABLE ONLINE

The University of Illinois and its partners say that a free online Preservation Self-Assessment Program (PSAP) is available for use after two years of research and development. The program helps collection managers prioritize efforts to improve conditions of collection materials. Through guided evaluation of items and collections, storage/exhibit environments, and institutional policies, the PSAP produces reports on the factors that impact the health of cultural heritage materials, and defines the points from which to begin care.

The program was created to assist any organization that collects paper documents/books, photographic and image materials, and audiovisual media, including library special collections, archives, museums, and historical societies. Like the Audiovisual Self-Assessment Program (AvSAP) which preceded it, the PSAP is designed to assist in organizations where little to no prior preservation training exists. The program helps collections managers develop a prioritized preservation plan as well as to educate them on the "health risks" posed to their collections and what they can do to mitigate them with the resources at hand.

In addition to the assessment functions, the PSAP also offers the Format ID Guide among other useful resources. The Format ID Guide is a stand-alone guide that can assist collection managers in identifying the formats of materials in their collections ranging from matte collodion photographs to U-matic video recordings. Once identified, the Format ID Guide provides useful advice on that material type's history, composition, preservation challenges, and optimal storage and display.

For more information, visit the program's website<https://psap.library.illinois.edu/>.

OREGON CITY SEEKS TO HIRE TWO PLANNERS

Oregon City is hiring two limited duration planning positions, including a .5FTE preservation planning position, which could be filled by either posting based on experience and desire to be involved in current planning. The deadline for application is Dec. 28. For more information, visit the city's human resources department website<http://www.orcity.org/humanresources/about-hr>.

NATIONAL HISTORICAL ORGANIZATION SEEKS AWARD NOMINATIONS

The American Association for State and Local History invites nominations for the 2016 Leadership in History Awards. The award program recognizes achievement in the preservation and interpretation of local, state, and regional history. AASLH initiated the awards program in 1945 to establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of state and local history throughout America.

The AASLH program recognizes exemplary work completed by state or federal historical societies, institutions, or agencies; regional, county, or local historical societies, institutions, or agencies; specialized subject societies in related fields such as oral history, genealogy, folklore, archaeology, business history, etc.; junior historical societies; privately owned museums or foundations; individuals; and organizations outside the field of traditional historical agencies. Awards are given for exhibits, public and educational programming, special projects, publications, multimedia, and individual achievement. Nominees need not be members of AASLH to qualify. Nominations are due on March 1.

For more information, visit the program website<http://about.aaslh.org/awards/>, or contact Bethany Hawkins at the AASLH office 615-320-3203 or
