TAKE TIME TO SUBMIT AWARD NOMINATIONS

This is a great time of the year to look back at the great efforts by individuals, businesses, organizations and projects during the past year and consider nominating one for an award. Both Oregon Heritage and Travel Oregon have awards programs currently accepting nominations.

Applications are now available to nominate individuals, organizations and projects that have made outstanding contributions to preserving Oregon's heritage for an Oregon Heritage Excellence Award. Nominations are encouraged for exceptional and commendable work with special consideration given to the development of new ideas, approaches and innovations in heritage-related activities. The awards are intended to draw public attention to important heritage efforts in Oregon and to raise the quality of heritage-oriented activities.

The deadline for nominations is Jan. 18. Award information, the nomination application and a list of previous winners is available at the awards website<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/award_info.aspx>. Additional information is available from Mike Gushard at (503) 986-0671 or mike.gushard at oregon.gov<mailto:mike.gushard at oregon.gov>

The Oregon Travel & Tourism Industry Achievement Awards recognize outstanding accomplishments during the previous calendar year. The state's most prized recognition is the Governor's Tourism Award, which was presented to Alice Trindle, the former vice chair of the Oregon Heritage Commission.

It also presents the Oregon Heritage Tourism Award, which was given last year to the Friends of the Sumpter Dredge. This award recognizes outstanding incorporation of Oregon's authentic cultural or natural history as a device to draw visitors to the state. More information about these awards, including a link to the nomination form are available at the Travel Oregon website<http://industry.traveloregon.com/oregon-governors-conference-on-tourism/awards/>.

THIS TIME, YOU CAN FIND THE TREASURE

Oregon Heritage News told you last week about the Mind Your Collections<http://mindyourcollections.org/> website and that it is highlighting a surprising treasure from the Lane County Historical Museum. Those of you who tried to look at that treasure found it impossible to look at it because of the mischief of a gremlin.

We've removed that gremlin so you can now view the Lane treasure.

If your organization has a unique and significant item in its collection that you would like to see featured, send photos and information about it and its care to Oregon Heritage at heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov>

HUMANITIES GROUP SEEKS YOUR ROOT WRITING

The editors of Oregon Humanities magazine would like your stories about rooting around, taking root, being uprooted or root-bound, getting to the root of a problem, being the root of the problem, and rooting someone on for their spring 2016 issue. They would like people to share stories and ideas about beginnings, origins, and foundations, or analysis of a historical or contemporary grassroots effort. Submissions could also describe the tension between staying put and being stuck.

Check out the Posts for the magazine's current issue<http://www.oregonhumanities.org/magazine/safe-summer-2015/posts5/1106>, then send your submission (400 words maximum) by Feb. 15 to posts at oregonhumanities.org<mailto:posts at oregonhumanities.org>. Submissions may be edited for space or clarity.
