Suggestions and proposals for sessions at the 2016 Oregon Heritage Conference are now being accepted.

Sessions related to the conference theme of "16 going on 20, 50 and 100: Reflecting on the Past, Capitolizing on the Present and Building the Future" are preferred. The theme highlights that this will be the 16th year of an Oregon Heritage Conference, the 20th anniversary of the first meeting of the Oregon Heritage Commission, the 50th anniversary of the Historic Preservation Act and the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service.

Significant anniversaries are often a time of celebration, commemoration and reflection. They can also be a time for bringing people and organizations together, creating new projects, and establishing new goals.

Other issues that will be addressed during the conference include digitization, advocacy, heritage tourism, oral history, archaeology, preservation technologies, historic theaters, collections care, creating the community story, bringing preservation to Main Street, fund raising, and disaster preparedness.

While presentations inform participants about best practices or innovative solutions, many are interactive or engage the audience directly. The conference will include keynote speakers, panels, workshops, and behind-the-scenes visits to some of the area's heritage sites and historic buildings. Proposals for presentations and sessions at the 2016 Oregon Heritage Conference will be accepted until Oct. 5.

The conference will bring together several hundred people who love and work with Oregon's heritage. Designed to be interdisciplinary, the conference focuses on all sectors of cultural heritage, such as historic preservation, museums, archives, libraries, historic cemeteries, historic sites, genealogy, and local and state government.

The conference will take place May 4-6 at the Oregon State Capitol. For more information or to submit proposals, contact Kuri Gill at kuri.gill at oregon.gov or 503-986-0685. All proposals will receive a response by Jan. 1.
