OREGON HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Oregon Heritage is looking for Oregon students researching Oregon! Full-time undergraduate and graduate students of an Oregon university or college who are researching a topic related to history, geography, archaeology, cultural heritage, historic preservation or related topic in Oregon are encouraged to apply for an Oregon Heritage Fellowship. Fellowship recipients will present their research process and findings at an Oregon Heritage event in 2017 and may be invited to submit their project paper for possible publication in the Oregon Historical Quarterly. Fellows’ research papers will also be posted on the Oregon Heritage website<http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/hcd/pages/index.aspx>.

OREGON STATE FAIR STARTS AUG. 26

That time of year has arrived when the Oregon State Fair, Oregon’s first designated Heritage Tradition, opens for eleven days of music, games, food, contests, fun and so much more! The State Fair can trace its roots back to 1858, a year before Oregon became a state. The Fair starts Aug. 26 and runs through Sept. 5. PIONEER WAGON ENCAMPMENT AT NATIONAL HISTORIC OREGON TRAIL INTERPRETIVE CENTER SEPT. 3-4

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center will be re-enacting an Oregon Trail Pioneer Wagon Encampment on September 3 and 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a special evening concert on Friday September 2 at 6:00 p.m.

The Labor Day Weekend activities start with music by folk singer Hank Cramer and Friends at the Trail Center’s outdoor amphitheater Friday at 6:00 pm.  Hosted by Trail Tenders, the cost is $5.00 at the gate. Cramer’s program includes an assortment of folk and contemporary music about the west.

Located outdoors in a circle of replica covered wagons, historical re-enactors cook meals over open fires, and offer samples of the types of food pioneers ate on the trail such as bison stew, bean and bacon, biscuits and cobbler. Dressed in clothing representative of the 1850s, and using tools and materials of the time, interpreters demonstrate a variety of trade skills, technology, and everyday activities used six or more generations back.

Visiting interpreters include blacksmith Peter Clark, wheelwright Jack Colwell, and teamster Bullwhackin’ Kass with her team of oxen. A mountain man will share stories and lore of the fur trade era while demonstrating flint knapping. Musical duo Carter Junction will perform frontier era folk music.

On Saturday and Sunday the program “An Evening Chat” will be in the Leo Adler Theater at 2 p.m.

The special exhibit “The Native Landscape” will be open in the Flagstaff Gallery.

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is located five miles east of Baker City, Oregon on Highway 86.  Take Exit 302 from I-84. The Center is currently open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. Admission for adults is $8 and $4.50 for seniors; children 15 and under are admitted for free. Federal passes are also accepted.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AT TUALATIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Summary:
The Tualatin Historical Society seeks an intern with some experience to help us design, develop and deploy an overall process to retain our archival materials. This opportunity is ideal for an intern seeking to take an existing, rather informal process and build a sustainable platform for ongoing archival collection and storage.  The candidate will report to the Tualatin Historical Society’s Historian and a dedicated volunteer team but would be expected to assume a project leadership role in the effort once basic fact finding tasks regarding the status quo, required milestones, and success criteria are established.      The internship will be three to five months in duration, scheduled to begin in the fall 2016.  A modest stipend can be arranged depending on the experience and expectations of the candidate.

The intern will be onsite in our Tualatin Heritage Center located in Tualatin Oregon.

Qualifications:

Required Skills:

-      Familiarity with modern archival theory, standards, and practices and their implementation. This knowledge includes an understanding of appraisal methods, arrangement and description, preservation, and access (digital/physical)

-      Understanding of and ability to create, populate and organize searchable archives of documents, audio and video recordings.

-      Knowledge of information technologies appropriate to special collections and archives, and familiarity with database management, word processing, spreadsheet software, and web-based applications and technologies used in an archives environment.

-      Ability to work collaboratively and independently toward the established success criteria.

-      Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Preferred Skills:

-      A desire and some exposure to the process of building a small but varied archival system.

-      Experience creating online finding aids and other descriptive tools.

-      Experience processing archival materials (digital / physical)

-      Experience processing images and audiovisual materials

-      Experience handling digital media and born-digital files in archival collections

-      Experience with digitization of archival materials and related delivery systems

-      Experience interpreting and applying restrictions for access to and/or use of archival materials

-      Computer skills

-      MS Office

-      Knowledge of best known methods for storage of documents, media, oral histories,  artifacts, artifact logs and control procedures.

Education/experience/certifications:
Enrolled or a recent graduate of a program study in Archival Studies, Library & Information Science, or related field such as History, Public History, or Computer Science.

OREGON HISTORIC TRAILS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS SEPT. 17

The Oregon Historic Trails Advisory Council (OHTAC) serves as an advisory body for activities and policies relating to Oregon’s 16 Historic Trails. OHTAC consists of nine citizen volunteers appointed by the Governor by Executive Order 98-16.
