OREGON CELEBRATES AMERICAN ARCHIVES MONTH IN OCTOBER

American Archives Month is a collaborative effort by professional organizations and repositories around the nation to highlight the importance of records of enduring value. Archivists are professionals who assess, collect, organize, preserve, maintain control of, and provide access to information that has lasting value. Archivists also help people find and understand the information they need in those records.

Since 2006 repositories in our state have worked together to celebrate this important work and increase Oregonians appreciation and understanding of the variety of records and material preserved by these institutions.

During October archival repositories throughout the state are planning celebrations to highlight their work and to help all Oregonians discover and appreciate the rich documentary heritage that can be found at these organizations.

Below are a couple of events to help you learn more about archives here in Oregon:

Portland Archives Crawl - Oct. 8, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Participants can "crawl" between the City of Portland Archives & Records Center, the Oregon History Society, and the Multnomah County Library where they can explore 28 local archives, special collections, and heritage organizations. See the link below for more information including all participating organizations.

Oregon State Archives Open House - Oct. 15, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Explore Oregon's brewing history at the State Archives annual Open House on Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As part of a national month long recognition of archives programs, we will feature records from our holdings that showcase Oregon's rich brewing heritage. Visitors can participate in activities that feature colorful trademarks of early Oregon breweries, hops production, the prohibition era, the "Beer Wars" and laws that helped usher in Oregon's booming brew pub industry.
