FREE COLLECTIONS PRIORITIZATION WORKSHOPS ACROSS THE STATE MAY-JUNE

Feeling overwhelmed with your collection? Not sure what needs to happen next? Trying to define a project for a grant proposal?

Join Elizabeth Kallenbach, Anthropological Collections Manager at the Museum of Natural & Cultural History for a workshop on prioritizing collections.

This workshop will cover fundamentals of collection management responsibilities, outline priorities for approaching collections, and assist heritage organizations in identifying priorities for their collections. If your organization is overwhelmed with trying to do too much at once, this workshop will help you think through how to define specific projects and goals. This workshop includes examples from Oregon museums, hands-on activities, and you will walk away with materials to conduct a pilot project at home.

WILLAMETTE FALL STORYTELLING PROJECTS SEEKS PARTICIPANTS MAY 4-6

Willamette Falls Legacy Project invites you join a free three-day digital storytelling workshops dedicated to stories about the Falls and opportunity for community members who have an attachment or connection to Willamette Falls to tell their stories. If you know of someone who has a story to tell (even if they don't know or think it yet), please forward this message with the links below.

Check out two samples from the February workshop for inspiration. Participants had very diverse connections to Willamette Falls and created powerful and moving visual stories for themselves and their community. These and others will be shown at the May 17th film festival  from 6-8pm at the Oregon City Library.

FINAL PROGRAM FOR SAHMDR 2018 CONFERENCE IS AVAILABLE

The final program is available and registration is open for the May 18-20, 2018 conference of the Marion Dean Ross Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. Links to the program and registration information are below. Our conference will be held in Astoria, Oregon this year. Inspired by Astoria's rich history and the diversity of its traditional ethnic communities, the conference theme is, "Constructing Community: Architecture, Diversity, and Identity in the Pacific Northwest."

The conference will begin on Friday with a visit to the Columbia River Maritime Museum and an opening reception and keynote speaker and will continue on Saturday with eight paper presentations by regional architectural historians, two special invited speakers, a downtown walking tour, and our annual banquet and keynote speaker. Sunday is reserved for a bus tour of regional historic sites.

Champoeg State Heritage Area will host living history actors, a replica historic townsite and other family-friendly activities for the annual Founders' Day celebration on Saturday, May 5. This year marks the 175th anniversary of the 1843 vote held in Champoeg that established the first provisional government west of the Mississippi River. The free event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Activities will include a reenacted fur trappers' camp, replica historic townsite with building facades, tradesmen demonstrating 19th century techniques and a post office with souvenir post cards. A 1 p.m. ceremony to honor the original May 1843 voters will feature distinguished speakers, a mock vote and a rifle salute. The afternoon concludes with a live stage coach run delivering the souvenir post cards to the St. Paul post office.

Founders' Day celebrates a vote held in Champoeg by local settlers on May 2, 1843. A large group gathered that day to decide the future of the Oregon territory. After a spirited debate, a slim majority voted "aye" to form Oregon's first provisional government, laying the groundwork for Oregon's statehood in 1859. Founders' Day has been held annually at Champoeg since 1901.

Event parking at Champoeg State Heritage Area will be free. Light refreshments will be available after the conclusion of the 1 p.m. ceremony. For more information visit oregonstateparks.org or call 503-678-1251.

2018 DIGITAL DIRECTIONS CONFERENCE IN ATLANTA OCT 15-16
