CEMETERY EVENTS IN DAYTON JULY 26-27

The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries (OCHC) is offering several events in Dayton, July 26 and 27. The free events are open to the public and include the commission's meeting, a presentation and a historic monument care workshop.

The OCHC will hold its public meeting at 2 p.m. July 26 at the Palmer Creek Lodge Community Events Center Auditorium, 606 4th Street, Dayton. The agenda includes a report on completed grants, the historic cemetery permit process, commissioner reports, and future meeting planning. Meetings are accessible to people with disabilities. Special accommodations and translation may be arranged up to 72 hours in advance of the meeting by calling 503-986-0690.

The presentation, "The Stephens Cemetery: Multiple-owner management of a historic cemetery" with Molly Casperson, district archaeologist with the Bureau of Land Management follows the meeting at 5:30 p.m. July 26 in the same location.

The Stephens Cemetery is a small historic cemetery located in Douglas County, in use 1879-1922. The cemetery is co-owned by the Bureau of Land Management and a private landholder, and access is controlled by a private business. Letitia Carson, a notable freedwoman, pioneer, midwife, and landholder, is interred at the cemetery, as well as the ancestors of several local families who still live in Douglas County. This is a case study in how to work with a variety of constituents for the documentation, preservation, interpretation and access of a culturally significant place. Following the presentation will be a discussion about historic cemetery management and negotiating these relationships.

The historic monument evaluation, cleaning and repair workshop will be 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Brookside Cemetery, 3rd and Mill Streets in Dayton. Participants should bring their lunch, snacks, water to drink, a stool or folding chair to sit on, gloves to wear, a hat, sunscreen, appropriate clothing as this is a hands on workshop, comfortable shoes, a pen and note pad and camera if they want to take photos during the workshop.

OCHC maintains a list of all historic cemeteries in the state. A cemetery must include the burial of at least one person who died before Feb. 14, 1909 to qualify as historic. The seven-member appointed commission helps people and organizations document, preserve and promote designated historic cemeteries statewide.

CHECK OUT "101 IDEAS FOR NEW REVENUE AT HISTORY ORGANIZATIONS"

The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) has come up with a list of "101 Ideas for New Revenue at History Organizations." It's worth checking out if you are considering ways to increase funds to your organization. Some of them are small tweaks here and there that might yield bigger results such as No. 8 on the list ,"Create a simple form to send to special event rental clients who are owed their full security deposit after the event that gives them the option of donating it in whole or part as a tax deductible contribution."

GRANTS AWARDED FOR VETERANS AND WAR MEMORIALS PROJECTS THROUGHOUT THE STATE

Oregon Parks and Recreation Department awarded five grants totaling $150,000 for projects across the state that create or preserve memorials to veterans or wars. Awards range from range from $8,850-$48,000.
Funded projects include:

  *   Documentation and replacement of the terra cotta tile roof of the WWI Dougboy Monument in Astoria.
  *   Addition of a memorial wall recognizing veterans from and living Bandon to the existing Coast Guard monument in Bandon.
  *   Construction of a memorial to commemorate the service of veterans in Warm Springs.
  *   Development of a veterans memorial in Malin.
  *   Construction of a memorial to local veterans from WWI to present in Veneta.
This competitive grant program was created by the Oregon legislature in 2005. Applicants must be local or tribal governments and the memorial must be on public land.

RESULTS OF DIGITAL HERITAGE COLLECTIONS IN OREGON SURVEY

In February-April of 2018, Oregon Heritage conducted a survey of heritage organizations in the state to learn more about their digital collections. Organization with and without digital collections were encouraged to respond. The goals of the survey were twofold:

  1.  Determine strategies, tools and trainings that will be most helpful to organizations at all stages of the digitization process.
  2.  Consider how to get collections from smaller organizations into the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) or on a centralized host platform.

Key Findings

  *   178 unique organizational responses
  *   128 of responders have digital collections
  *   114 organizations are actively digitizing their collections
  *   The number of digital heritage objects in Oregon is estimated to be between 231,000 and 580,000
  *   Of the 50 organizations without digital collections, 45 expressed an interested in digitizing
