Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives generated $6.2 billion in GDP and 170,000 jobs in 2017

The program is administered by the National Park Service and the Internal Revenue Service, in partnership with State Historic Preservation Offices.

"Historic preservation tax incentives continue to drive investments in historic preservation and revitalize communities across the country," said National Park Service Deputy Director P. Daniel Smith. "Over the past 40 years, this successful federal/state partnership has enabled the preservation and rehabilitation of more than 43,000 historic properties, while generating more than $144 billion in private investment along the way."

Nominations open for public history projects and people for NCPH awards

NCPH awards recognize excellence in the diverse ways public historians apply their skills to the world around us. The purpose of the award program is to promote professionalism and best practices among public historians and to raise awareness about their activities. Awards are presented to recipients during the annual meeting.

$1,000 recognizing a project-digital, print, film, exhibit, etc.-that contributes to a broader public reflection and appreciation of the past or that serves as a model of professional public history practice.

A $1,000 award for the best book about or growing out of public history published within the previous two calendar years (2017 and 2018).

Two $500 travel grants to encourage new professionals, practicing public history for no more than three years, to attend the 2019 Annual Meeting in Hartford, CT.
ROBERT KELLEY MEMORIAL AWARD<https://ncph.org/about/awards/kelley-award/>
This $500 award honors distinguished achievements by individuals, institutions, or nonprofit or corporate entities for making history relevant to individual lives of ordinary people outside of academia.
MICHAEL C. ROBINSON PRIZE FOR HISTORICAL ANALYSIS<https://ncph.org/about/awards/robinson-prize/>
A $500 cash award and a certificate, rewarding historical studies that contribute directly to the formation of public policy.  This biennial prize will next be awarded in 2019.
GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD<https://ncph.org/about/awards/student-awards/>
Five travel grants of up to $300 each for graduate students presenting (session, poster session, or working group) at the 2019 Annual Meeting in Hartford, CT.
STUDENT PROJECT AWARD<https://ncph.org/about/awards/student-awards/>
The $500 travel grant to attend the 2019 Annual Meeting recognizes the contributions of student work to the field of public history.

Do you want to attend the 2019 American Alliance for Museums Conference?

Then consider applying for the Oregon Heritage Preservation Training Scholarship! This scholarship covers costs associated with travel, lodging, meals, and registration to attend a heritage preservation related conference, training, or workshop. The American Alliance of Museums<https://annualmeeting.aam-us.org/about/> is just one of the conferences folks have used this scholarship to attend. In 2019, this conference will be in New Orleans, May 19-22.

The next round of scholarship applications are due on Nov. 30 and it is for trainings occurring between Jan. 1, 2019-June 30, 2019. It is a competitive process so including some match would be compelling to the selection committee. Other conferences happening during that period of time include:

2019 Oregon Archaeological Society Basic Training begins Feb. 9

OAS Basic Training is an annual program taught by experienced regional professionals from organizations such as the U.S. Forest Service, BLM, and the University of Oregon. The sessions are typically held on six Saturdays in late winter at the Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus.

If you looking to learn more about archaeology basics, or need a refresher on the history of the Pacific Northwest, this is a great introductory program. Completing the OAS Basic Training program will allow you to have access to volunteer field work opportunities with professional archaeologists, including the University of Oregon field school and excavations and lab work at Fort Vancouver.

Topics for the first two sessions include archaeology basics as well as information on artifacts, laws and ethics, Northwest archaeology and rock art, site stewardship and volunteering. The four additional training sessions cover field excavation, laboratory methods, site mapping, cataloging and compass reading. The program is a great way to network with other archaeology lovers and to learn how you can get involved in the field. Please reserve your space early.

The entire six-session package is $95 which includes a one-year OAS membership,
or $65 for current OAS members.
