The 2019 Oregon Heritage Summit addresses the importance of leadership

"Leadership comes in many guises - proactive, reactive, or benign, it can drive an institution forward or bind it to the past; it can be a lightning rod for change or preserve stasis. It can move mountains or set a museum back a decade." From the book Leadership Matters by Anne Ackerson and Joan Baldwin.

Leadership is always the starting point for building a stronger, more capable organization, and strong leadership starts with the Board of Directors. The 2019 Summit is designed to support the leaders of Oregon's heritage by digging deeply into the theory and practice of great boards, including:

  * The role and function of a board of directors
     * Relationship to community as stewards of community funds
     * Fiduciary, strategic, and generative roles of board leadership
     * Distinction between oversight and micro-management
     *   Theory of delegation
  * Adapting best practices to your board of directors
     *   Setting appropriate expectations
     * Defining the right size and scope for your board
     *   Organizational structure
  * Building the best possible board for your heritage organization
     * Overview of the board development process
     * Creating a board development process for your group

Through small group activities and large group discussions, the Summit agenda will weave together learning about best practices and applying those ideas to your group's needs. Multiple participants from each organization are encouraged to attend to develop strategies for putting ideas to work back home. That is why we have a scholarship available for organizations that send two people, one of which has to be board member. This scholarship is given out on a first-come, first-serve basis to those that apply and consists of $300 to help defray travel and lodging costs to be disbursed following attendance of the Summit. The Scholarship application can be found here<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/docs/2019_Heritage_Summit_Scholarship.pdf>.

For more information on Summit topics, format, Keynote speaker, and goals, visit here<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx>. Early bird registration just opened so be sure to register before April 4 to get the best possible price. Summit registration also includes the Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards Banquet.
