2020 Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards announced

Oregon Heritage would like to announce the 2020 Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards winners. Award winners include individuals, organizations, and projects that have made outstanding contributions to preserving Oregon heritage. In this uncertain time, it is now more important than ever to celebrate and affirm the value of heritage work accomplished in Oregon. This year we received the most nominations than any other year, a tribute to the great work being done and how important it is.

Awards recognize action over and above the call of duty. "The award recipients represent the extraordinary efforts to preserve Oregon's heritage," said Beth Dehn, coordinator for the Oregon Heritage Commission. "They also serve as models for others on how to develop new ideas, approaches, and innovations."

The recipients are:

-- Astoria YMCA Restoration Project, for excellence in façade restoration of a nearly abandoned building and honoring the building's civic roots in reuse.

-- Black Butte Cupola Restoration Project, for a collaborative historic preservation effort between Friends of the Metolius and Deschutes National Forest to restore and preserve the 1922 look-out structure.

-- Brookside Pioneer Cemetery,* for creating a cemetery preservation plan, documenting conditions, and repairing over 121 headstones to their original upright positions.

-- Janice Dilg, scholar, public historian, and history builder who uncovers diverse voices of resistance, particularly related to Oregon's women's history.

-- David Ellis, for a distinguished 50-year career preserving Oregon's archaeological, ethnohistoric, and historic resources and encouraging Tribal participation in cultural resources management.

-- Eileen Fitzsimons, for dedicated statewide work on heritage projects preserving Oregon's history, including devotion to historic trails, the Oregon Quilt Project, and local history.

-- Oregon Chinese Diaspora Project, a grassroots Federal/State/Local partnership in public archaeology helping to rewrite the role of the Chinese diaspora and Chinese Oregonians in the history of the state.

-- Don Peting, founder of PNW Field School and central figure at UO Historic Preservation Program for 40 years who has created a ripple effect through those he has taught.

-- Racing for Change- The Eugene Story, a partnership between Oregon Black Pioneers and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History that prioritized community outreach and input to tell a local story about race relations in Eugene.

-- Phyllis Zegers, a dedicated volunteer who has researched over 3,360 unclaimed cremated remains in the custody of the Oregon State Hospital and assisted in reuniting approximately 573 urns with family members.

*Sally Donovan Award for Historic Cemetery Preservation

The Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards are a project of Oregon Heritage, part of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. This year's awards were planned to be presented in conjunction with the Oregon Heritage Conference on April 24, 2020. The event has been canceled in response to COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. Oregon Heritage is committed to honoring the hard work and accomplishments of the award winners and will announce an award event once it is confirmed.

Oregon Heritage COVID-19 Commiseration Call recap

Last week Oregon Heritage staff invited those doing heritage work in Oregon to participate in what we cheekily called the "Oregon Heritage COVID-19 Commiseration Call". The goal was to provide a mechanism to talk about what's going on so folks did not feel alone and could connect and brainstorm with a network. We learned a lot on that call but we think overall it was good to connect with folks. During the call we heard from three heritage organizations what they are doing right now and what they see as future issues to manage.

Below is a recap of the three stories we heard:

Michelle Cordova with Willamette Heritage Center discussed staff limited to a skeleton crew but that the board voted to apply for the payroll protection program. The board reached out to donors asking for support during this time and they had some good responses to that. Volunteers really wanted to get back in there and help so they developed boxes of projects and organized times that volunteers could pick up the projects and do them at home. They decided to really ramp up their social media presence during this time and even expanded the number of social media outlets they are using. They are trying to organize some social distance online learning opportunities. She has a goal to revise the budget and they have to take into account event rental shortages for this year and the uncertainty of being able to hold large gatherings.

Bill Gates with Southern Oregon Historical Society said their biggest challenge is not necessarily the payroll, but rather taking care of bills for the assets they have. SOHS has two historic sites, Hanley Farm and a building in downtown, and a warehouse full of artifacts. The most immediate issue they are facing is trying to replace a tenant in one of their buildings and the challenge of doing that during social distancing protocols and also paying things like insurance and the bills. They have not yet laid off staff but that discussion is evolving. One of their issues is that they were just getting some momentum and now they have to put their plans on hold, which hits the morale of those involved. They are working on getting their programs online and ramping up their social media presence.

Kevin Teater with Beaverton Downtown Association agrees that losing momentum was a big issue in Beaverton as well. Awesome things were starting to happen and the community was getting engaged and then it all came to a screeching halt. They are organizing video calls with stakeholders to ask them how they are doing and also organized calls with other Main Street managers to see what they are doing in their downtowns. They are helping businesses with social media, getting stores online, and organizing delivery services. They are also trying to do some behind the scenes look via social media.

These were just some of the stories that were mentioned. Here are some other topics mentioned by those that joined us:

  * Some suggested some social media managing services, such as Later<https://later.com/>, to help with scheduling posts
  * There were a lot of questions/comments about virtual tours
  * Discussion on moving Board meetings to a virtual format such as Zoom, Gotomeeting, Skype, etc.
  * Starting the conversation of what recovery looks like

You can see a full recording of the call here<https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/recording/3474156983210061825>.

We are planning on doing another call next week with a focus on communicating with different stakeholder groups to encourage support of the organization. So, SAVE THE DATE for Thursday, April 23, 11am-12pm. Details on the call can be found here<https://calendar.google.com/calendar/event?eid=NzIzZmpic3E0ZjZjaDN2dDA4ZjR1dWg2bGsgOGFrNXA1b241cDBldjZqajg4dWVsanVxNDBAZw&ctz=America/Los_Angeles>.
