In honor of MayDay: Disaster Preparation in the Middle of a Disaster

Today is MayDay in the heritage preservation field. MayDay was established by the Society of American Archivists and Heritage Preservation, the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation and encourages libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and preservation organizations to set aside May 1st to participate in MayDay.

The latest Oregon Heritage Exchange Blog post reflects on how to do disaster preparation in the middle of a disaster…sound familiar? We are all responding at this very moment in different ways to this unprecedented disaster. This blog post focused on a position paper published in 2018 by UNESCO and the World Bank. It is a framework on how culture is integrated, and integral, in all phases of recovery. You can read the post here<https://oregonheritage.wordpress.com/2020/05/01/disaster-preparation-in-the-middle-of-a-disaster/> and access a link to the original position paper. Incidentally, one of the consultants that worked on this paper was a featured Keynote Speaker at our canceled 2020 Oregon Heritage Conference, little did we know how relevant it would be to current happenings!

Just a reminder that if you participate in doing one thing related to disaster preparedness, you can enter a drawing to win a giftcard to Gaylord for collections supplies. For ideas on what to do or to enter the drawing visit AIC/FAIC’s MayDay resource page<https://www.culturalheritage.org/resources/emergencies/mayday>. You have until May 31, 2020 to share your story and enter the drawing.

Oregon Heritage COVID-19 Commiseration Call: Preservation Month, May 6, 11am

Join us May 6, 11am-12pm, for the third Oregon Heritage COVID-19 Commiseration Call featuring Historic Preservation Month.

May is Historic Preservation Month and we know that many communities traditionally have celebrated with robust programming for the entire month. COVID-19 has derailed many of those plans but our conversation will focus on how to adapt programs so that historic preservation can still be celebrated and valued at a time when it is most needed. Whether you have already implemented ideas or are looking for ideas, join us so we can talk about the following:

What is your community doing make Preservation Month virtual?
What’s the best idea you’ve seen?
If you have already done an activity, what worked and what did you learn?
Bring an idea you’d like the group to help you modify.

You can find the call information here<https://calendar.google.com/calendar/event?eid=NmM4Nm0yaW0yNGkybG4xbXF2czc0MmxwOHQgOGFrNXA1b241cDBldjZqajg4dWVsanVxNDBAZw&ctz=America/Los_Angeles>. Be sure to copy and paste the call info to your calendar so you can join us.

Recovery/Re-Opening info added to Oregon Heritage COVID-19 resource page

A reminder that we are collecting COVID-19 resources on the Oregon Heritage COVID-19 Resource page<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/COVID-19-Resources.aspx>. We have just added a new section, “Recovery/Re-Opening”. Some of the current resources there include:

  * "How to Get Ready to Open the Doors<https://www.aam-us.org/2020/04/29/how-to-get-ready-to-open-the-doors/>", AAM pulled these resources from their members only section to provide them for free to all. Addresses what it looks like for staff/volunteers and some of the things that might change operation like ticket systems, payment options, etc.
  * Lessons Learned from SARS: How Museums Emerge After Crisis webinar<https://www.aam-us.org/2020/04/27/lessons-learned-from-sars-how-museums-emerge-after-crisis/>, presented by AAM (recorded on 4/27/20).

If you have an awesome resource that we should add, please email heritage.info at oregon.gov<mailto:heritage.info at oregon.gov>. Meanwhile, it looks like organizations are starting to do webinars on what re-opening might look like for organizations so be sure to check out the calendar widget at the bottom of the Oregon Heritage COVID-19 Resource page<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/COVID-19-Resources.aspx> for upcoming webinars we have collected.
