MentorCorps applications for assistance deadline extended to Aug. 25

The application deadline to request Oregon Heritage MentorCorps assistance is extended to Aug. 25.

The MentorCorps is a trained group of volunteers with professional experience in collections care, emergency management, and non-profit management. Its members are ready to help your organization get the guidance, training, and tools it needs to get the job done.

Some of the ways mentors can help your heritage organization include (but are not limited to!):

  *   Project prioritization
  *   Project planning
  *   A collection assessment to help prioritize collection needs and projects
  *   Review of policies and procedures
  *   trainings such as collections care basics, topics related to board roles and responsibilities, disaster preparedeness, volunteer management, and more.
  *   Grant application advice and review
  *   Recommendation of resources and references
  *   and more!

Those requesting mentor assistance will be matched with a mentor based on factors such as geography and skills and abilities.  Mentors are assigned to organizations for a period of nine months and assistance may be in person, virtual, or by phone depending on distance and type of projects.

Oregon Heritage Call for Proposals/session matchmaking service

The power of heritage has never before been made so clear as it has in recent times. In 2020 we had planned to inspire heritage organizations at the conference, to help you realize and enact your organization's power within your communities. Instead, you blew us away with your proactive actions, your steadfastness, and most of all, your resilience. From proactive collecting for historic events, providing information about similar historic events, responding to civil unrest, saving historic sites from fires, to just surviving financial uncertainty. You harnessed the power, now let's embrace it and multiply it. Join us in 2022 as we explore ways in which heritage preservation empowers communities, uncovers untold stories, preserves history in the making, creatively engages audiences, and proves its value.

Join us by submitting proposals that share projects, tools, messaging, and opportunities that help heritage organizations embrace their vital role in their communities.
Conference proposals related to this theme might include:


  *   Public Engagement

  *   Including More Voices

  *   Promoting the Value

  *   Advocacy

  *   Creative Programming

  *   Partnerships/Collaboration


Oregon Heritage invites creative proposals! Panels and lectures are welcome, as well as facilitated conversations, debates, practical training, or other suggestions.
There are two options for session proposals:

  *   75 Minute Session
  *   Half-Day Pre-conference Workshop (3-4 hrs)

Session matchmaking service:
We can also provide a matchmaking service if you have something to say about one of the following topics but may not know others with stories on the same topic so contact us or fill out the form and we can help match folks together. Also, if you have any specific requests for trainings, let us know that too!


  *   Did you start proactively collecting stories and objects during the pandemic, wildfires, civil unrest, or other events occurring in your community? Let us know!
  *   Has the pandemic or other factors have your staff and board reconsidering how your organization is structured, or does programming, or exhibits, or responds to inequity? Let us know!
  *   Did you have a successful collaboration or partnership in the last year? Let us know!
  *   Has your board discussed addressing social justice issues in your community and how your organization responds to the issues? Let us know!
  *   Has your organized discussed equity and inclusion and enacted plans or programs in response? Let us know!
  *   Has your organization looked into who makes up your community and responded with programs, outreach, translation, or other planning efforts? Let us know!
  *   Did you have successes, challenges, lessons learned, or awesome planning process with a digitization project? Let us know!
  *   Do you have any specific training requests?
  *   Have a project with great outcomes, process, or lessons learned related to heritage preservation, archaeology, geneaology, cemetery item? Let us know!

The Oregon Heritage Conference brings together people who love and work with Oregon's heritage. Designed to be interdisciplinary, the conference focuses on all sectors of cultural heritage, such as historic preservation, museums, archives, libraries, historic cemeteries, archaeology, Tribes,  and local and state government.

Portland awarded NPS underrepresented community grant

The National Park Service announced the award of $743,531 to 17 projects in 14 states to support diverse communities identify and nominate sites to the National Register of Historic Places. The Underrepresented Community Grant Program focuses on work towards diversifying the nominations submitted to the National Register of Historic Places.

Portland was the only Oregon project to receive a grant. The $50,000 grant the city of Portland received will go towards a survey and historical Context for Portland's LGBTQ+ Community.

PastForward Diversity Scholarship Program: Now Accepting Applications for Scholars and Mentors

The Diversity Scholarship Program supports the attendance of those from underrepresented communities new to preservation and of emerging preservation professionals at the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual conference, PastForward Online 2021, November 3-5. All diversity scholars and the first 50 mentors will receive complimentary registration. Apply before August 13.
