Frank Lloyd Wright Gordon House seeks General Manager

The Gordon House Conservancy is hiring! We are looking for a dynamic, organized, preservation-minded person to become our part-time Gordon House Manager. The person hired for this position must have excellent customer service experience and a willingness to be a bit flexible with their time.

Position Title:
Gordon House Manager
25 hours/week
10:30-3:30 M-F

(Some flexibility is required, occasional weekends and evenings are required)

$22.00/hour

The Gordon House is a historic house museum designed in 1957 by Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959), an American architect whose career spanned more than 70 years. The House is built in Wright's Usonian style, a style he developed as an affordable, efficient housing alternative for the middle classes. In 1963-64 the Gordons had the house built on what was their rural farm property along the Willamette River, near Wilsonville, OR. The house was sold to non-family owners; consequently moved to its present site near the Oregon Garden in 2001, and opened as a museum in 2002. Approximately 6,000 visitors from across the country and the globe visit the site each year. The house museum not only offers tours but is available to rent for a variety of occasions and has been the site of weddings, receptions, dinner parties, celebrations of life, fundraisers, and concerts. One of the primary goals in filling this position is to hire a highly-skilled Manager who will become a vital element of a small but devoted team of staff, volunteers, and Board. Our new Manager will champion the mission of this organization by being dedicated to the preservation of the Gordon House and to educating the public about Wright's architectural principles.

NPI On-Demand Training: Streetscape Design

Streetscape Design: Strategies for Historic Districts

Overview
Streetscapes in historic districts are often redesigned without recognition of the unique historic features-such as pavement, street trees, and lighting-that defined the street during the period of significance. In many communities, after detailed preservation goals for historic architecture have been established, inappropriate lighting, decorative pavement, and flowering trees are randomly selected to 'beautify' the street. This introduction to the history of the American streetscape presents strategies to design attractive streets that are historically appropriate.

Article: Reconsidering Monuments in the West

Responding to criticism from Indigenous people and historians, some communities in the western United States are beginning to reconsider "pioneer monuments" that often celebrate the violence of settler colonialism. AASLH Releases the 2022 National Census of History Organizations

Today, AASLH is excited to answer these and many other questions about the U.S. history community by publishing the 2022 National Census of History Organizations: A Report on the History Community in the United States<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2F458rl1jp.r.us-east-1.awstrack.me%2FL0%2Fhttps%3A%252F%252Faaslh.org%252Fcensus%252F%2F2%2F01000181200689f3-c994b5cb-5cdb-4a38-815b-e1a199dc9ee3-000000%2F9BM2WwjKjITgZwsxSoOlci48qmc%3D272&data=05%7C01%7CKatie.HENRY%40oprd.oregon.gov%7C4be686be6e124fc1ba1f08da43e8fc80%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C637896965481805299%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ujSDJShZtuaprKK6TeIaAdOeq9GMzgB56x%2BgNYCp6sI%3D&reserved=0>. Carried out through support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and led by researchers Carole Rosenstein (George Mason University) and Neville Vakharia (Drexel University), this research and report provides a snapshot of the U.S. history community at a crucial moment for our field and for the country.

Over the past two years, AASLH and the "History Census" research team have identified 21,588 history organizations in the United States as part of this first national effort to produce an up-to-date, comprehensive, and high-quality list of history museums, historical societies, and related history organizations. That makes the history community the largest sector of the museum field many times over, and means there are more history organizations than there are public libraries, Starbucks, McDonald's, and Walmarts.

Among the project's major findings:

  * History organizations are ubiquitous. Our institutions have a presence in nearly every community, often reaching places underserved by other arts and culture organizations.
  * The field operates through a deep and distinct partnership between government and private nonprofits. This hybrid model can be a source of strength as well as many challenges.
  * There is a pervasive sense that history has a public purpose. History organizations from the smallest to the largest place community and public benefit at the center of their work.
  * The vast majority of organizations are small. More than 80 percent of private nonprofit history organizations report revenues of less than $200,000 per year
