Upcoming 2024-2029 Oregon Historic Preservation Plan Public Meetings

This summer and fall Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is asking Oregonians how Oregon’s heritage is special to them in a series of 90-minute virtual public meetings and an online survey to direct state-wide preservation goals for the 2024-2029 Oregon Preservation Plan. The SHPO is an office of Oregon Heritage.

Meetings will focus on a specific region or topic, but all are welcome to attend one or more of the meetings. At the regional meetings participants will identify what issues matter most, how to best preserve the state’s history, and what government agencies, cultural institutions, and each Oregonian can do. Topic-based meetings will discuss how the heritage community can better address diversity, equity, and inclusion in cultural resource programs, disaster preparedness and response, and planning for cultural resources in development and infrastructure projects. The meetings will be held Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00, June through September by Zoom video and teleconference.

Meetings
(NOTE: The Portland Metro Area meeting was originally scheduled for June 29 but has been moved to July 21)
The virtual meetings are organized by region and some by topic. All meetings are 6:30-8pm. Register for individual meeting by selecting the link.

Oregon State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation meets June 24

The State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation (SACHP) will meet Friday, June 24th in person at the North Mall Office Building, 725 Summer Street NE, Room 124A&B, in Salem to consider nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. The SACHP meeting is open to the public.

Friday’s meeting agenda includes a presentation by the State Historic Preservation Office’s (SHPO) Grants and Outreach Program Coordinator, a temporary rule update by OPRD’s Associate Director; a guided site visit (for Committee members only), and hearings of four proposed nominations.

The meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. Anyone may listen to the meeting and instructions on how to attend electronically will be posted on the commission web page prior to the meeting. Registration is required to speak at the meeting, and is available online at https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Commissions.aspx#SACHP

The committee will review four proposed nominations beginning at 1:00p.m.: Salem Civic Center, Salem; Charles H. and Mary B. Carey House, Portland, Multnomah County; Cahill-Nordstrom Farm, Clatskanie vicinity, Clatsop County; and Dallas Cinema, Dallas, Polk County.

For specific hearing times, refer to the online agenda: www.oregonheritage.org<http://www.oregonheritage.org> (click on “Commissions & Committees” at top of page and look under “State Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation”).

The SACHP is a nine-member governor-appointed citizen commission with credentials in many historic preservation-related fields.

Nominations recommended by the SACHP go to the National Park Service, which maintains the Register under the authority of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. More information about the National Register of Historic Places process is online at www.oregonheritage.org<http://www.oregonheritage.org>.

This effort aligns with the Oregon Historic Preservation Plan goal to increase the thematic diversity of Oregon properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It also supports the goals to include more voices and increase access to Oregon heritage that are part of the Oregon Heritage Plan.

The conference call is accessible to people with disabilities. Special accommodations for the meeting may be made with at least three days of advance notice by calling (503) 986-0690.

Preserving LGBTQ Historic Spaces

In an effort to bolster the existing scholarship that had been produced, the National Park Service embarked on an effort to create a document that focused specifically on how the agency could address the lack of LGBTQ listings on its two primary designation lists, and among its historic site and park units. Check out this article on the National Trust for Historic Preservation Blog that looks at the theme study for LGBTQ Historic Spaces. Decoding Building Challenges virtual event, Aug 2-4

The Association for Preservation Technology in cooperation with Main Street America presents...Decoding Building Code Challenges, August 2, 3, 4 2022 – virtual. Registration web link: https://tinyurl.com/58fybxzt<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftinyurl.com%2F58fybxzt&data=05%7C01%7CKatie.HENRY%40oprd.oregon.gov%7C8c4a2926e66a4700014708da53dac4cf%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C637914496781502113%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=6KJRF640TCzUTxreChKsOE6mdT%2FBXxaqCPMsqsa7WSc%3D&reserved=0>
There are thousands of designated and informal Main Streets in America’s smaller towns and urban neighborhoods. These districts are often composed of smaller, one- to three-story masonry or woodframe buildings with retail shops or offices on the first floor and opportunities for residential units above. Far too often, the entire building or upper stories are vacant or underutilized, hampering reinvigoration of neighborhoods. Owners wanting to rehabilitate these buildings are commonly stymied by the high cost of building upgrades forced upon them “to meet modern building codes.” These demands become economic barriers to investment and burdens to owners. The code barrier has become a reality in many communities, particularly for the upper stories, where vacancy rates can exceed 50%. This workshop will provide a detailed examination of the building stock on Main Street to explore its typical building features and connect these characteristics to compliance paths within the International Existing Building Code (IEBC). The team of experts for this workshop will break down issues related to fire safety, accessibility and energy conservation and explore more financially viable alternatives to make buildings safer and meet codes.

13.5 hours worth of AIA, RCEP, ICC and AICP credits have been applied for.

Fees:
• $175 - APT and Main Street members
• $295 - Non-members
• $175 - Government Rate
• $75 - Student
