Northwest Digital Heritage celebrates Athena Heritage

The State Library of Oregon and the Athena Public Library are proud to announce a new digital collection, Athena Heritage<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.northwestdigitalheritage.org%2Fs%2Fs%2Fathena&data=05%7C01%7CKatie.HENRY%40oprd.oregon.gov%7C85f8e7272bba48bb3d5e08dab6acf22b%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638023151156970632%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=QNJQpfhBwRedG3IEs5pMTssX5rqBhE3e4W2poB6A6O4%3D&reserved=0>. The Athena Heritage collection includes dozens of images and documents from the Athena Public Library's Local History Collection, recently digitized and hosted online through the State Library's Northwest Digital Heritage<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.northwestdigitalheritage.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7CKatie.HENRY%40oprd.oregon.gov%7C85f8e7272bba48bb3d5e08dab6acf22b%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638023151156970632%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=z9MyfI8vl6nz578Jf2jhUnkrzMd4pACklp3a8v3%2FJWQ%3D&reserved=0> program. These items will also soon be discoverable in the national Digital Public Library of America<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnwdh.dp.la%2F&data=05%7C01%7CKatie.HENRY%40oprd.oregon.gov%7C85f8e7272bba48bb3d5e08dab6acf22b%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638023151156970632%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=S7TCuxtFGGdFPUWki1GUAahBf8%2BjhQBqbunYjs%2FtzOI%3D&reserved=0> (DPLA) platform, via Northwest Digital Heritage's DPLA hub efforts. Photos and documents were mainly contributed by local schools and families within the community.
Athena Heritage is Oregon's first brand new digital collection to come online via Northwest Digital Heritage. "Using the Washington State Library's Washington Rural Heritage program as a model," says Digital Projects Consultant Ross Fuqua, "Northwest Digital Heritage seeks to create and enhance access to collections at Oregon's smaller libraries and museums through digitization and metadata harvesting, training, and also by migrating existing digital collections to more accessible platforms. We're really excited to digitize even more material from the Athena Public Library's collection this fall, and we're looking forward to working with more Oregon organizations in the near future."
Northwest Digital Heritage is a partnership between the State Library of Oregon, Oregon Heritage, and the Washington State Library. To date, Northwest Digital Heritage has added over 200,000 unique items related to Northwest history and culture, and has recently worked with the Orbis Cascade Alliance, Oregon Digital, and University of Washington Libraries to create a distinctly Northwest portal of over a half million unique items available at: nwdh.dp.la<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnwdh.dp.la%2F&data=05%7C01%7CKatie.HENRY%40oprd.oregon.gov%7C85f8e7272bba48bb3d5e08dab6acf22b%7Caa3f6932fa7c47b4a0cea598cad161cf%7C0%7C0%7C638023151156970632%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=S7TCuxtFGGdFPUWki1GUAahBf8%2BjhQBqbunYjs%2FtzOI%3D&reserved=0>.

Funds are intended to develop and refine skills, systems, structures and strategies so the organization can successfully fulfill its mission and achieve outcomes that are more impactful. Funds also support diversity, equity and inclusion training and coaching to support these entities as they advance racial equity within their organizations and through their work.
If an entity finds that capacity building is not a priority for their community, then a Small Project grant may be requested.
Applications open at 8 a.m. on Nov. 2 and will be accepted until Nov. 28 at 5 p.m. Total funding available for the Capacity & Small Project Grants program is $1.5 million.
