Last two Oregon Heritage Vitality Study Workshops this week! Cascade Locks & La Grande

Join us to shape the future of Oregon's heritage sector! This year, the Oregon Heritage Commission is supporting an important update to a decade-old Oregon Heritage Vitality Study. This study will help us understand the current state of the heritage sector in Oregon, highlighting key issues that impact the sector, and provide recommendations at the local and state level to address collective needs and challenges. Right now, we need your help to guide the recommendations that will be included in the Study.

During this interactive workshop, we'll share an overview of the key issues you helped us identify through the Vitality Study Survey earlier this year and then brainstorm changes and resources that would better support your work. This is your chance to influence the tools and policies that will shape the heritage sector in Oregon over the coming years.

There will be 5 workshop options around the state of Oregon based on your location for you to choose to attend. All workshops will include the same content and agenda, just in different locations to ensure regional inclusion. If none of these work for you, we will also hold a virtual workshop option as well, however we would appreciate as many attendants during our in-person participation if possible! Light refreshments or a light lunch will be provided. Here are the workshop options:

  1. Coos Bay Workshop on Monday, April 8th at 3pm at the Coos History Museum DONE! Thanks Coos Bay Workshop Participants!
  2. Medford Workshop on Tuesday, April 9th at 10am at the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society DONE! Thanks Medford Workshop Participants!
  3. Virtual Online Workshop on Tuesday, April 16th at 12pm DONE! Thanks Virtual Workshop Participants!
  4. Forest Grove Workshop at the Oregon Heritage Conference on Friday, April 19th at 10:30am (Note: you do not need to register for the conference to attend the workshop) DONE! Thanks Forest Grove Workshop Participants!
  5. Cascade Locks Workshop at Gorges Beer Co. on Thursday, April 25th at 3pm
  6. La Grande Workshop at the Cook Memorial Library Community Room on Friday, April 26th at 12pm (Light lunch provided)

Request for Proposal (RFP): Design and Fabrication for Camping in Clackamas County Exhibit at the Museum of the Oregon Territory
Below is an excerpt from the RFP. For the full RFP contact:
Stephen Greenwood, Executive Director
Clackamas County Historical Society
director at clackamashistory.org<mailto:director at clackamashistory.org>
Project Background and Overview
The Clackamas County Historical Society (CCHS) in Oregon City is requesting proposals for the design and fabrication of a new exhibit in an ~800 square foot section of the Museum of the Oregon Territory (MOOT) [see Appendix B for spatial layout and dimensions]. This RFP is for the design and fabrication of the exhibit's display, lighting, audio-visual components, and other related materials. The exhibit looks at the reasons why people camp in Clackamas County by exploring the Jennings Lodge campsite, other historical campsites, and other types of camping beyond recreational. These stories and histories are woven together through the overarching theme of community.
Since 1952, CCHS has collected, preserved, and shared the history and culture of Clackamas County. The collection continued to grow, and members of the historical society realized that the preservation and interpretation of Clackamas County's history required a museum building with trained staff. In 1990, the historical society opened a museum that is now the Museum of the Oregon Territory. The collection now holds over 35,000 artifacts, including over 10,000 digitized photographs. CCHS staff include an Executive Director, a Cultural Research Historian, a Visitor and Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, and a Web and Print Media Specialist. CCHS is currently developing a strategic plan to partner with key stakeholders and ensure that we are serving our community. The completion of this exhibit and its accompanying education programs will bring us closer to achieving this goal.

Climate Resilience Resources for Cultural Heritage
The American Institute for Conservation and the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation work together to promote the preservation and protection of cultural heritage.
Climate Resilience Resources for Cultural Heritage (CRR) is a free online toolkit that gives individuals and organizations who care for cultural heritage the power to plan for climate change impacts and minimize damage from climate-related events.
CRR allows cultural heritage sites to increase their awareness of climate risk and events, develop the knowledge and skills needed to take steps to climate resilience including creation of a climate resilience plan, and provide the tools needed (in English and Spanish) for establishing collective learning groups and guide community action. The resources are tailored for cultural heritage stewards and communities, sites, and organizations of all sizes and locations in the US and its territories.
The resources consist of:

  * Climate Risk Map: A web-based, interactive map showing current and future climate risks and impacts to cultural heritage.
  * Learning Modules: Tools, resources, and activities to help people improve resiliency. The content developed by the Learning Modules can be input into a climate resilience plan template. Learning Modules 1-4 are currently available, with four additional Modules and Spanish translations of all eight coming in March 2024.

  * Learning Groups: Two regional learning groups (in Puerto Rico and New Mexico) were piloted in 2023 to explore using the resources and creating community-driven support networks. Guidance for others interested in creating Learning Groups will also be shared.

FAIC partnered with Environment and Culture Partners to develop Climate Resilience Resources for Cultural Heritage. It was made possible in part by the National Endowment for Humanities as the first action item resulting from Held in Trust<https://www.culturalheritage.org/about-us/foundation/programs/held-in-trust>.

New NPS Resources on Sustainability, Energy Efficiency, Resilience, and Historic Buildings
Historic properties can be made more sustainable, energy-efficient, and resilient, improving their performance and use while also preserving their historic character. Doing so not only improves their efficiency and livability but helps to ensure their long-term preservation as well.
The NPS has been providing guidance and technical preservation information on these issues in relation to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties for decades since producing one of its first Preservation Briefs on the subject of energy efficiency in 1978.
Current NPS guidance and information are collected and presented in a new webpage<https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1739/sustainability-energy-efficiency-resilience-historic-buildings.htm> for easy access to further explore these topics.

National Trust Preservation Funds June 3 grant deadline
National Trust Preservation Funds Grants from National Trust Preservation Funds (NTPF) are intended to encourage preservation at the local level by supporting on-going preservation work and by providing seed money for preservation projects. These grants help stimulate public discussion, enable local groups to gain the technical expertise needed for preservation projects, introduce the public to preservation concepts and techniques, and encourage financial participation by the private sector. A small grant at the right time can go a long way and is often the catalyst that inspires a community to take action on a preservation project.
Grants generally start at $2,500 and range up to $5,000.
For the June 3, 2024, grant round, the National Trust Preservation Funds grant program has dedicated funding to award in the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin. https://savingplaces.org/preservation-funds?utm_medium=email&utm_source=update&utm_campaign=grants
