<P><FONT size=3><FONT face="Times New Roman">The Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries announces the availability of cemetery safety caution signs for historic cemeteries listed with the Commission. During the summer of 2012 several national stories of injuries and deaths in cemeteries lead the Commission to release position paper regarding unstable markers and other cemetery features. Further discussion and inspiration from Commissioner Mike Leamy of Astoria led to the creation of a sign to warn cemetery visitors to the weight and instability of cemetery features, even in well-maintained cemeteries.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

<P><FONT size=3><FONT face="Times New Roman">This sign project complements another program that provides signs denoting the historic designation of the cemetery. <o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

<P><FONT size=3><FONT face="Times New Roman">“The Commission tries to focus on practical services and programs for historic cemeteries.” noted Commissioner Dirk Siedlecki. “This simple sign will remind people to use caution both for safety and for preservation of the markers.”<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>

<P><FONT size=3><FONT face="Times New Roman">State law established the seven-member commission to maintain a listing of all historic cemeteries and gravesites in Oregon; promote public education on the significance of historic cemeteries; and help obtain financial and technical assistance for restoring, improving and maintaining their appearances. One sign is available, free of charge, to each historic cemetery listed with the Commission.<o:p></o:p></FONT></FONT></P>
