<p class="MsoNormal">Seven tours that explore the Capitol and its grounds, successful preservation projects in Salem, and Grand Ronde cultural programs are included in this year’s Oregon Heritage Conference. Several of the tours are limited in size and are
 filling up fast.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The conference theme is “16 Going on 20, 50, 100: Reflecting on the Past, Capitolizing on the Present and Building the Future.” The theme highlights several major heritage anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of the first meeting
 of the Oregon Heritage Commission and the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Heritage Conference also includes keynote speakers, receptions, breakout sessions and the Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards presentation that are equal parts innovation, inspiration and practical advice. You can register for these special

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Capitol Art Collection Tour</b>: Public art coordinator Megan Atiyeh will tell you about the Capitol’s art collection as she focuses on those items that entered the collection from 1976-1979.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Capitol Renovation Project Tour</b>: See how the design team explored the seismic needs of the 80-year-old Capitol building and found solutions for treating them while honoring preservation. Gain a general understanding of unreinforced
 masonry and non-ductile concrete buildings and why they need to be reinforced. Learn how laws apply to seismic strengthening and potential changes.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Capitol Tour</b>: Enjoy a general tour of the history and features of the Capitol and, if it is dry, go to the roof.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Elsinore Theatre Tour</b>:  Lights, camera, action. They will all be there as you learn about the restoration of this 1926 movie palace and how it made the successful transition to non-profit status. You will be surprised by the theater’s
 unique features and learn about acclaimed architect Ellis Lawrence and his attempt to design it to resemble Hamlet’s castle.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Grand Ronde Cultural Tour</b>: Learn about the cultural programs of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation at the new Chachalu Museum and community longhouse. Learn about the interpretive, traditional arts programs,
 cultural resources programs and more. Transportation and lunch provided.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Heritage Tree Tour:</b> Tour Heritage Trees designated by Oregon Travel Experience are within walking distance of the Capitol. Enjoy a walk to get the trees’ history and to learn more about the designation program.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Salem Downtown Preservation Tour:</b>  This behind-the-scenes look will take you to two of Salem’s most recent successful downtown rehabilitation projects, including the Grand Theater and the Heritage Excellence Award-winning Roth-McGilchrist
 Building. You will learn how these projects have been successful.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Heritage sites in the Salem area are also opening on Wednesday, May 4. Take your own tour by jumping on the special trolley that will run on a circuit among four important Salem locations.<o:p></o:p></p>
