In the hundred plus years that the southeastern Oregon city of
Lakeview’s Post & King Building—now listed in the National Register
of Historic Places—has been around, it’s been a jail, a saloon, a
rooming house, and brothel. Even while it sat empty, in the late
seventies, a wedding took place there, and that couple, the Buttons,
still live in Lake County.

Many people that Kimberly Howard, Trust Manager for the Oregon Cultural
Trust, met on a recent trip to Lakeview had stories about this landmark
building, which was purchased in 2006 by South Valley Bank and lovingly
restored to house its local branch offices. Inside, the walls are
adorned with large prints of historic photographs, donated by the Lake
County Historical Society. This is a community steeped in its history.

It is because of communities like this, because of people like these,
that the Oregon Cultural Trust was created.

The Cultural Trust supports activities and projects of the Oregon
Heritage Commission, the Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries, the
State Historic Preservation Office and 1,300 cultural nonprofits in
Oregon’s 36 counties. This is an invitation for you to join us to
support the cultural heritage that means so much to you.

Make a contribution to your local historical society, a historic
cemetery, a heritage site or a nonprofit restoring an historic building.
Then make a matching donation to the Cultural Trust, today. When you
do, you’ll earn a 100% Oregon tax credit for your Trust gift.

The cultural tax credit is the incentive to give; the reason is to
sustain and advance Oregon culture.

Give by December 31 at www.culturaltrust.org (
http://www.culturaltrust.org/ ).
